Sirius XM’s 1st Wave to dedicate a week to Robert Smith and The Cure in April

The Cure

Details are still a bit sketchy, but Sirius XM’s 1st Wave channel — for longtime XM listeners, that’s the watered-down replacement for the late, lamented Fred — will dedicate a full week to The Cure in April.

A Chain of Flowers, the definitive source for Cure news, reported last month that the satellite-radio network was rumored to be negotiating with Robert Smith to come into the studio and play Cure songs for a full week on First Wave.

This morning on 1st Wave, ex-KROQ DJ Richard Blade confirmed that the classic-alternative channel will be “taken over” by the Cure the week of Smith’s birthday, which is Tuesday, April 21.

That would be two days after the Cure headlines the closing night of this year’s Coachella festival. My hunch would be that 1st Wave’s Cure week will actually be the week before Coachella, in order to promote the band’s appearance.

It’s still unclear, however, whether Smith and Co. will be in the studio all week, whether First Wave will play solid Cure tunes that entire time or whether they’ll simply let the band program the week’s playlist.

Update 2/27/09: Got an e-mail back from 1st Wave this week that said, “While we love him, Richard is a bean spiller. We haven’t 100% confirmed a date but we are planning to feature The Cure for a week sometime in April. You’ll have to wait for the ‘official’ announcement for the details.”
