Mike Watt celebrates 25th anniversary of The Minutemen’s ‘Double Nickels on the Dime’

The Minutemen's 'Double Nickels on the Dime' turns 25 this month

Mike Watt himself will be on hand to help celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Minutemen’s classic Double Nickels on the Dime double album at the Bowery Poetry Club & Cafe in New York City later next week.

The July 25 event will pay tribute to the sprawling, 45-track album, which was released in July 1984 and now is considered one of the twin pillars of ’80s American underground rock, along with Husker Du’s double LP Zen Arcade, released the same month.

Watt, the trio’s bassist, is slated to perform at the anniversary event, along with Minutemen cover band Pillowman, “mystery punk bassist” The Bass Player From Hand Job and others. Michael T. Fournier, author of the Double Nickels on the Dime installment in the 33 1/3 series, also will be on hand.

The event’s organizers advise attendees to “be prepared for the extreme unusual, with spoken word renditions of songs on the album, musical tributes, rare videos and recordings, and special musical guest stars.”
