R.E.M. crashes its own tribute concert, plays surprise song with Patti Smith

R.E.M. and Patti Smith

This week’s star-studded Carnegie Hall tribute to legendary college-rock grads R.E.M. was capped off with an appearance by the band itself, performing “E-Bow the Letter” with Patti Smith.

The unbilled appearance by Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills wrapped up  a night of tribute performances by the likes of Bob Mould, The dB’s, The Apples in Stereo, Kimya Dawson, The Feelies and, uh, Darius Rucker from Hootie and the Blowfish.

The mighty Calexico served as house band for the Wednesday night concert, proceeds from which went to help music programs for underprivileged youth in New York City.
