Butthole Surfers’ reunited ’80s lineup heads out on North American tour this fall

The core ’80s lineup of the Butthole SurfersGibby Haynes, Paul Leary, Jeff Pinkus, King Coffey and Teresa Taylor — embarks on its first extensive North American tour in 20 years tonight with an opening-night concert in Houston.

With Pinkus and Taylor back in the lineup together for the first time since 1989, the reunited band got its freak on with some U.S. and European dates last summer, but the 21-date fall trek — which wraps with a pair of Halloween shows in Dallas and Austin, Texas, with Peaches — marks its first extensive U.S. outing since the late-’80s.

An announcement of the tour on the band’s MySpace warns fans to expect vintage Butthole Surfers’ material at these concerts, given the lineup: “Um, so if you want to see the band play ‘Pepper,’ this is not the tour for you.”

Additionally, the group — whose name was famously sanitized as the B.H. Surfers during its early-to-mid-’90s Lollapalooza stint and improbable commercial breakthrough — will be joined at its three California dates by the equally weird Melvins.
