Dave Kendall of ‘120 Minutes’ tracks down the Whitman Samplers’ ‘Really Stupid’

Dave Kendall on MTV's "120 Minutes"

Kudos to “120 Minutes” creator/host Dave Kendall for tracking down and posting a copy of the long-forgotten early-’90s parody song “Really Stupid,” which poked fun at the Brit VJ by sampling his voice (“Do you ever wake up in the morning and think… I am really stupid?”) over a sampled riff from AC/DC’s “Back in Black” and the classic Clyde Stubblefield beat from James Brown’s “Funky Drummer.”

Last month, Slicing Up Eyeballs — for no apparent reason — began an initially fruitless quest to track down the song, which was cobbled together by a crafty San Diego college student under the moniker The Whitman Samplers, and aired on San Diego’s 91X and perhaps KROQ in Los Angeles, too, while Kendall was host of “120 Minutes” in the early ’90s.

Kendall — who currently hosts “Party 360″ on Friday nights on Sirius XM Satellite Radio’s classic-alternative station, 1st Wave — mentioned the track on his own Web site and in a 2003 interview with 120 Minutes Archive, but, when contacted via e-mail, said he no longer had a copy of the tune… but wanted to hear it again.

Early this morning, Kendall dropped Slicing Up Eyeballs a note saying an acquaintance, Brian Cox, had dug up the “unauthorized treasure” for him, and he’d posted the song to his Web site for all to hear. So now the quest is complete…

Special thanks to Dave Kendall and Brian Cox for hunting down and posting the tune.
