Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo fractures wrist playing tennis, band reschedules tour

Sonic Youth: Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo, Thurston Moore, Steve Shelley

Thanks to a tennis injury of all things, Sonic Youth has been forced to reschedule much of its fall mini-tour of the Southwestern U.S. in support of this year’s lauded Matador Records debut The Eternal.

The band today announced that guitarist Lee Ranaldo fractured his wrist playing tennis, requiring the cancellation of two fall concerts and the postponement of five others, now rescheduled for early January. “Please join us in wishing him a quick and thorough recovery,” the band writes on its Web site.

Sonic Youth is scrapping its Sept. 26 concert at the Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara, Calif., and its appearance at the Austin City Limits Music Festival on Oct. 4. Refunds for the Santa Barbara concert are available at the point of purchase, according to the band. Five other concerts in California and Arizona have been rescheduled beginning Jan. 4.
