Depeche Mode cancels San Diego concert as Dave Gahan continues to rest vocal cords

Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan

Dave Gahan’s vocal problems have derailed yet another Depeche Mode concert, as the band has just announced it won’t perform tonight at San Diego’s Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre.

The canceled gig — like Wednesday’s scrapped performance at Shoreline Amphitheater just south of San Francisco — “will not be rescheduled this year,” according to DM’s Web site.

“We are incredibly disappointed to not be able to perform for our fans tonight in San Diego,” Gahan said in a statement posted on DepecheMode.com. “We hope to be back soon to play for all our fans in the area.”

According to the band, Gahan remains on doctor’s orders to “continue on complete vocal rest.”

For San Diego ticketholders, refunds will be issued at the point of purchase. At the moment, the tour is slated to resume Sunday and Monday with a pair of sold-out shows at the Hollywood Bowl.

This week’s two cancellations are just the latest on Depeche Mode’s trouble-plagued Tour of the Universe, which opened with DM canceling or postponing  more than a dozen shows in May and June when Gahan fell ill just prior to a Greek concert; it was later revealed he had a cancerous tumor removed from his gall bladder. Then, in July, the band canceled the final two nights of its European leg after Gahan tore a calf muscle during a concert in Bilbao, Spain.
