Podcast marks 30th anniversary of Public Image Ltd.’s ‘Metal Box’

Public Image Ltd., 'Metal Box'

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Public Image Ltd.’s classic second album, Metal Box, as beloved for its aural contents — the collision of Jah Wobble’s dub basslines and Keith Levene’s fractured guitar sound —  as its unique packaging: three 12-inch records encased in a metal 16mm film canister.

Getting an early jump on the anniversary — the record was released Nov. 23,1979 — San Franciso/Los Angeles low-powered FM station Pirate Cat Radio earlier this month posted a podcast of its Metal Box special.

The podcast features new interviews with Wobble and PiL drummers Martin Atkins and Richard Dudanski (but not frontman John Lydon), plus music sourced from an original vinyl pressing of Metal Box.

According to PiL fansite Fodderstompf, the podcast will be kept online as a downloadable MP3 through early April.
