Pet Shop Boys cover Coldplay’s ‘Viva la Vida,’ Madness’ ‘My Girl’ on new ‘Christmas’ EP

Pet Shop Boys

The Pet Shop Boys this week announced plans to release a Christmas-themed EP — simply entitled Christmas — in December that will include covers of Coldplay’s ubiquitous “Viva la Vida” and the Madness chestnut “My Girl.”

The five-track EP is due out Dec. 14 in the U.K. on CD and digitally (see full tracklist below), and features new versions of “All Over the World” — from the band’s current album, Yes — and “It Doesn’t Often Snow at Christmas,” originally released as a fan club holiday single in 1997. Both tracks are co-produced by Marius de Vries and feature new orchestral and choir accompaniments.

The EP also includes two versions of Madness’ “My Girl,” which PSB first performed live with Suggs and Carl Smyth at last year’s “Can You Bear It?” benefit concert for the family of the late Dainton Connell, a friend and former assistant to Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant. (See video below.)

Yet the most attention certainly will fall on the EP’s mashup of the Coldplay hit “Viva la Vida” and PSB’s own “Domino Dancing,” which has been a highlight of the duo’s current world tour (see video below). The new studio version was produced by Stuart Price.
