The La’s ‘Callin’ All’ 4CD, 91-track box set to feature unreleased rarities, live cuts

The La's

The short life of enigmatic Liverpool indie-pop act The La’s will be celebrated this spring with Callin’ All, a four-disc, 91-track box set that compiles singles, b-sides, unreleased outtakes and live material — and no fewer than six versions of “There She Goes,” the band’s oft-covered signature tune.

Due out May 3 in the U.K., according to The Second Disc, the set — which shares its name with a 2001 compilation of “lost” La’s tracks from the ’80s — purports to include the group’s “remaining unreleased recordings” and “captures the band’s myriad attempts to capture the feeling that Lee Mavers attempted to harness in their sound.”

Disc 1 collects the band’s singles, including 1987 debut “Way Out,” an unreleased version of “Timeless Melody” from 1989 and the original 1988 version of the aforementioned “There She Goes,” before it was re-recorded for the band’s lone, self-titled, album.

Disc 2 features “the best of” the band’s outtakes, versions of the La’s limited songbook recorded with one famed producer after another, including John Porter (The Smiths), John Leckie (The Stone Roses), Mike Hedges (The Cure) and Steve Lillywhite (U2), among others. (Lillywhite eventually pieced together The La’s in 1990, although the alleged perfectionist Mavers famously bad-mouthed the final product.)

Finally, Discs 3 and 4 capture the La’s live in concert, featuring previously unreleased performances recorded in London and Manchester in 1989 and 1991, plus five tracks recorded for Dutch radio that haven’t been released before.

  1. I love The La’s. I love the Sex Pistols. I love the Modern Lovers. Probably my three favorite one-and-done album bands (Stone Roses don’t *quite* count).

A boxed set is overkill for any of these acts. We don’t need 3-6 versions of any of our favorite songs in a single package.

Since the LA’s and the Pistols sets are already out, I guess I’m just hoping that they don’t do this to the Modern Lovers.

Actually, check that. A Modern Lovers box would actually be really cool.

For total fanatics, this La’s set may be cool. But for most people it just makes us wonder how this can get released on physical media when The Plugz, Desperate Bicycles can’t get a CD release and when The Smiths can’t get reissued.

    Cheers,

    Dan

  2. Just wondering do we have a release date for this? Also where can we order from!
