New releases: New Prefab Sprout album, reissues from The Feelies and The Fall

RELEASE: Let’s Change the World With Music
BACKSTORY: For the reclusive U.K.  sophisti-pop act’s first new album in eight years, bandleader Paddy McAloon delivers the long-lost follow-up to 1990’s Jordan: The Comeback. The new album, however, does not feature re-recordings of the old songs McAloon began in the early ’90s, but, rather, what are being referred to as “finished” versions.

ARTIST: The Feelies
RELEASE: Crazy Rhythms, The Good Earth
BACKSTORY: The first two albums from the hugely influential college-rock act are reissued as remastered CD and vinyl editions. However, in a somewhat unusual move, the bonus material — five tracks for 1980’s Crazy Rhythms, and three cuts for 1986 follow-up The Good Earth — will be made available only be digital download, “as the band consider each album to be a discrete aesthetic artifact.”

ARTIST: The Fall
RELEASE: Hex Enduction Hour: Deluxe Edition
BACKSTORY: Released in 1982, the fourth studio LP from Mark E. Smith and Co. receives the two-disc reissue treatment this week, with a second CD that features tracks recorded for John Peel in 1981, the single “I’m Into C.B.” and six live songs taped between November 1981 and August 1982.

RELEASE: The Stone Roses
BACKSTORY: They’ve been out for a month already in Europe, but the U.S. editions of the 20th anniversary reissue of the Roses’ debut finally arrive this week in four formats: a single-disc “Special Edition,” a 2CD/1DVD “Legacy Edition,” a 3CD/1DVD/3LP/USB drive “Collectors’ Edition” and a gatefold vinyl edition.

BACKSTORY: The fourth album from the U.K. guitar band is the first to feature a new six-stringer: Johnny Marr, formerly of The Smiths and, more recently, Modest Mouse.
