Vintage Video: David Bowie and Trent Reznor perform Nine Inch Nails’ ‘Hurt’ in 1995

The 1995 co-headlining tour by David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails was one for the ages, with each act playing a full set that was bridged nightly when the Thin White Duke and his bandmates joined Trent Reznor and Co. — touring in support of their epic The Downward Spiral — to perform a handful of Bowie tunes and a couple NIN songs together, before segueing into Bowie’s full set.

For years, fans have clamored for high-quality video from the trek, and as fan site The NIN Hotline notes, some finally emerged two months ago on the Vimeo page of David Williams, a film editor who apparently worked on a pro-shot film of the Bowie/NIN tour (and, among his other credits, edited Anton Corbijn’s video for Depeche Mode’s “World In My Eyes”).

Above you’ll see a superb clip of Bowie and Reznor playing NIN’s “Hurt” (with a killer guitar intro by Reeves Gabrels), part of the transition between the two sets; after the jump are clips of Nine Inch Nails and Bowie performing the latter’s “Hallo Spaceboy” together, and clips of Bowie doing “The Heart’s Filthy Lesson” and Reznor and his bandmates ripping through “Wish” (that video is labeled “David Bowie,” but it’s all NIN).

See more video from the David Bowie/Nine Inch Nails tour after the jump…

    Amazing…….. Absolute perfection.

  3. Wow! I agree completely with the above comments that this made my week and it’s absolute perfection. Ohhh how I hope Bowie decides to do something live again!

  4. Those were the days….and an awesome legacy left behind by two trail-blazing talents. The quality of the clips is really good, too, and that makes it all the more special, seeing how NIN is probably history and David Bowie’s future in live performing is…unclear?…I’m keeping hope alive, anyway. Thank you for the red-hot nostalgia.

  5. NIN is maybe history, but Trent Reznor isn’t, the band was just an alias for him, nothing more.
He’s releasing some new stuff this week. :)

A pity that I can’t watch those amazing videos anymore.

  7. I wish I could watch them… What is the passcode? I’ve seen them once already, but I was hoping to get another look at them.

  8. Nearly all the Bowie / Reznor live tracks can also be found on YouTube. Besides Nin’s ‘Hurt’ they also performed Nin’s ‘Reptile’, & Bowie’s ‘Scary Monsters’. I’m not 100% sure but I’m pretty sure ‘I’m Afraid of Americans’ could also be found since they collaborated on that and Trent Reznor was the ‘stalker’ in the music video. It wouldn’t surprise me if there are more random gems hidden about the interwebs featuring them together. Though Trent has released several Bowie covers as tribute to his late friend and mentor. Also I highly recommend looking up the songs Nin & Gary Numan have performed live together as they are both MASSIVE fans of each other too. That stuff is great. NIN had previously released a B-side cover of Numan’s ‘Metal’ & I’ve seen live concert footage of them performing that together. For other great Numan covers, when Trent Reznor was working with Marilyn Manson and recording/producing Manson for Reznor’s now defunct ‘Nothing Records’ (a division of ‘Interscope’, on the CD single for Marilyn Manson’s ‘Lunchbox’ there was a cover of Gary Numan’s ‘Down In The Park’, this cover often goes over looked and as a fan of both (actually I’m a fan of all 4 here in this comment!) I have to say it’s one of the best covers MM ever did and I love the majority of his covers.

  9. I shared this with the commentary above you too:
