Madchester icon Shaun Ryder — leader of Factory Records troublemakers Happy Mondays — celebrates his 48th birthday today, and to commemorate the occasion, here’s a vintage live performance of the band’s biggest hit: “Step On,” their cover of John Kongos’ 1971 single “He’s Gonna Step On You Again.” This great clip — featuring a typically laconic Ryder reading from a fistful of lyric sheets — is taken from the long-out-of-print VHS release “The Happy Mondays Party,” a concert film recorded at Manchester’s G-Mex on March 25, 1990.
