Orange Juice collects ‘all recordings’ on 7-disc ‘Coals to Newcastle’ box set this fall

Orange Juice, 'Coals to Newcastle'

Early-’80s indie-pop outfit Orange Juice this fall will release a comprehensive 6CD/1DVD box set called Coals to Newcastle that will include all four of the Scottish band’s albums, a host of singles and B-sides, BBC sessions, live performances and a DVD featuring the rare concert film “Dada With Juice.”

Due out Nov. 7 on Domino, the seven-disc, 143-track set features “16 previously unreleased tracks with another 23 tracks previously unavailable on earlier reissues” from the acclaimed act, credited with fusing sharp post-punk guitars with the rhythms of soul and funk — perhaps no better than on its classic U.K. Top 10 hit “Rip It Up.”

The forthcoming anthology — which frontman Edwyn Collins touts as “the comprehensive collection of all OJ recordings” — opens with an expanded version of The Glasgow School, the 2005 compilation of Postcard Records-era tracks, then dedicates a disc to each of the band’s four albums — You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever, Rip It Up (both 1982), Texas Fever and The Orange Juice (both 1984) — fleshed out with additional period cuts.

The sixth disc features BBC sessions recorded between 1980 and 1984, while the DVD contains the band’s music videos for “Rip It Up” and “What Presence?!,” plus four “Old Grey Whistle Test” performances and the complete “Dada With Juice,” a 13-track concert film released posthumously on VHS in 1985 (see full tracklist below).

Finally, in related news, Collins — he of the 1994 smash “A Girl Like You” — returns Sept. 20 with Losing Sleep, his seventh solo album and first in three years (download the title track here). In November, Collins will support the disc with a 10-date U.K. tour.
