Contest: Win ‘Hand in Glove: Smiths Tribute’

'Hand in Glove: The Smiths Tribute'

We may still be taking entries for this month’s Retro:Active 7 — Rare & Remixed giveaway, but we’ve got another great contest lined up: Our friends at 24 Hour Service Station are providing us with three copies of their brand-new Hand in Glove: The Smiths Tribute to give away to Slicing Up Eyeballs readers.

The Florida-based label is the same one that put out the New Order tribute we gave away earlier this year; this new salute to The Smiths features 14 classics — including “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out,” “I Know It’s Over” and “Reel Around the Fountain” — covered by indie acts such as Vampire Slayers, Thee Chinadoll and Skinnys 21 (see the full tracklist and hear Vanilla Swingers’ cover of “Hand in Glove” below).

And here’s the kicker: This is actually a digital-only release — you can buy it on iTunes — but the label has pressed up a limited number of promotional CDs, so the winners of this contest will actually receive the album on an old-fashioned compact disc.

To enter, simply leave a comment at the bottom of this post — if you’re feeling inspired, you can also tell us what your favorite Smiths song is, and why. As always, be sure to use a real e-mail address, since that’s how winners will be notified. We’ll accept entries — from anywhere in the world — through noon Eastern time on Sept. 24.

UPDATE 9/24/10: The contest is now closed, and the following commenters have been randomly selected as winners: Larry Mac, Mary Anne Tom and Hans Karup. To everyone else, thanks for entering — and stay tuned for more giveaways.

There is a light that never goes out has been my favorite since high school–adolescent melancholy, sigh.

  2. Dean Vaccaro

my favorite Smiths song changes often… today it’s Bigmouth Strikes Again. and now that i think of it, what an appropriate choice given Morrissey’s recent comments…

  3. My all-time favorite Smiths song is Panic. It’s just so damn catchy, and always gets stuck in my head. And I know it won’t affect my chances of winning, but I would love to have this CD to play on my radio program (I play a lot of covers, especially by/of new wave and post-punk bands).

  4. That is a great selection of Smiths tunes! Favorite Smiths song? Why don’t you ask me who is my favorite son! If you are MAKING me pick then I would go with The Queen is Dead. Everytime I hear it I go right back to my youth, new found independence and a more carefree existence. THERE I DID IT, just don’t tell all the other amazing SMITH songs that I picked one…

  5. Krista Manuelson

My favorite Smith’s song is “I know its over”. Morrissey somehow perfectly encapsules through his voice and the lyrics the feelings of having a broken heart and wanting to die. The confusion of wanting to be kind and being angry. Its really a perfect song. Like a lot of Smith’s songs.

  6. Scott Flaherty

“Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me” for the oh-so-poignant angst it reminds me of from my teenage years. :)

  7. So many great songs, from first (“Reel Around the Fountain”) to last (“I Won’t Share You”). Sigh.

  8. Nolan Siegler

The Smiths are such and amazing band, There is a Light that Never Goes Out is definitely a favorite.

  9. “Stop me if you think that you’ve heard this one before..”

  10. Rusholme Ruffians, is there are better way to describe teenage love?

  11. If I had to pick a favorite I would say “This Charming Man”.

  12. catfish vulture.

  13. “There is a light that never goes out”. Have a double decker bus tatooed on my forearm. Pathetic

  14. I like the version of “Hand in Glove” with Sandie Shaw. Or maybe “William It Was Really Nothing” for the artwork originally used for the single.

  15. AndyTheCureFan

    I love Rubber Ring!

  16. “How soon is now” heard through my best friend’s older brother’s door, saved me from an adolescence of listening to Led Zeppelin IV over and over, and over.

    Save KTRU,
    DJR

  17. I’ve always loved Sweet & Tender Hooligan!

  18. Love the Smiths! I know it’s over, is my favorite smiths song. Would Love to Win!!

  19. “Heaven knows I’m miserable now”

  20. Robert Allensworth

My favorite album is ‘Meat Is Murder’. That was the first Smith’s album I ever bought on vinyl and then cassette. Lyrically it’s a great snapshot of Morrissey’s upbringing and who he grew to be. And Johnny Marrs’ guitar work is ultimately stellar.

  21. You Just Haven’t Earned It Yet, Baby… greaaat song!

  22. So many great songs but if i was hard pressed to pick, I’d say “Hand In Glove”. It may be a bit over played but it’s still a wonderful tune.

  23. The Queen is Dead…especially live!

  24. Back To The Old House is my favourite. Now can I please have a free CD? Thanks!

  25. Love Smith covers, even though i don’t recognize these bands.

  26. “Girlfriend in a Coma” always makes me smile.

  27. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be “Rubber Ring.” It’s especially poignant when it fades into “Asleep” on the original b-side.

  28. Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now…with Stop Me…Before for a runner up.

  29. Picking my favorite Smiths song is like picking my favorite donut. I like just about everything behind the counter, and, depending on my mood, will often choose the Homer Simpson favorite strawberry frosted, but am just as likely to choose a Boston Cream, or a jelly filled.

What I’m trying to say is that it’s a really tough question.

  30. Love the Smiths! Shocking the tribute doesn’t include my two favorites How Soon Is Now? and Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want, but still an awesome list. Good luck to me and two other people in the contest! Thanks.

  31. I know it’s a cliche for Smiths fans – but “How Soon Is Now?” is by far both my favorite Smiths song and all-time favorite song by any band. I even like the “unauthorized” video that Morrissey claims to hate. The Smiths meant everything to me during high school and continues to fulfill nearly 20 years later.

  32. Sonny Muzzin

Still ill and Handsome devil are the two that stick to my mind the most. I was 10yrs old when Hatful of Hallow was given to me from a gracious skin head gal working the counter at Dr.Disk. I forever owe you for leading my musical taste in the right direction.

  33. Huge Smiths fan from their inception onward…my college soundtrack essentially. So difficult to choose one but I love Johnny Marr’s work on “Big Mouth..” Loved that cover too…thanks for posting.

  34. Velton Coelho

My two favourite Smiths songs are “I Know It’s Over” and “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out”. They are absolutely gorgeous Marr songs and have the two most passionate Morrissey lyrics. And also the fact he recorded “I Know It’s Over” vocals in one take – the first – is amazing.

  35. Fun, difficult and impossible to choose a favorite. But a cpl songs that instantly take me back to memorable times are ‘cemetery gates’ and ‘that joke isn’t funny anymore’.

  36. ‘Cemetery Gates’, “That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore”, “What Difference Does It Make” … Oh boy, too many to choose from …

  37. I Know It’s Over, I feel like the song was written for me.

  38. Girlfriend in a Coma

  39. It’s impossible to call any one Smiths track an ultimate favorite, but “Rubber Ring” always hits home because it’s the perfect snapshot of my outsider teen self. That music raised me, opened my eyes and still means more than almost anything else.

  40. “Cemetery Gates” and “Ask” classic Moz lyrics ripe for singing along. Pilot Scott Tracy does a cover of “There is a light that never goes out.” Great band! but would like to have seen them cover it in their new wave/punk style…

  41. Impossible to pick a favourite Smiths track, they’re all gold. I think “some girls are bigger than others” is a good example of why the smiths work though. It’s that contrast between johnny’s mesmerising guitar harmonies and morrissey’s dry humour, and mike and andy’s rythmic “song within the song”. Perfection.

  42. This Charming Man. I’ve always been a Smiths guy for Marr instead of Morrissey, and that is my favorite guitar part ever.

  43. Elizabeth York

My favorite Smiths song is “Rubber Ring,” because I danced to it at my wedding.

  44. too cranky to be clever or quotable; just to note that johnny continues to delight… moz less so.

  45. My favorite Smiths tune would be a toss up between: The Queen Is Dead (Take Me Back To Dear Old Blighty) and/or How Soon Is Now?

  46. I’d rather have more Smiths songs done by the Smiths but this’ll work! Cemetary Gates is the best. I love the “dizzy whore” line. Too funny…I laugh every time!

  47. Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want

  48. Love the Smiths. How Soon is Now is my favorite.

  49. I love the smooth delivery of Morrissey on all his songs. even my son who likes Linkin Park digs the Smiths.

  50. I could peruse the albums and ponder the criteria for determining my favorite track. But instead, I’ll check my profile at last.fm to see which song I’ve listened to most in the last 2.5 years. And the winner is… This Night Has Opened My Eyes with 24 plays.

  51. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but probably “This Night Has Opened My Eyes”.

  52. A Favorite “That Joke Isnt Funny Anymore” Not Too Many Singers Out there That Can Probably Cover that Song Successfully! ;D

  53. I hate the smiths, but my best mate loves them, so give me the cd so I can give him a lovely surprise…..

  54. Oscillate Wildly, You Handsome Devil. Let me place my hands on your mammary glands.

  55. My favorite Smiths song is Ask. Can I please have the CD? See now you can’t say no, how could you?

  56. Favourite Smith’s song!!! At the moment it is probably ‘Sweet and Tender Hooligan’. That said, it is always the intro to ‘The Queen is Dead’ that takes me back. Days of old my friend, days of old!

  57. PS. My favourite Smiths memory (and thus probably favourite memory of all time) is the first gig I ever attended and hearing This Charming Man, and Handsome Devil, and……

  58. My favorite song is I know it`s over

  59. I Love all the Smiths songs,I saw them in 1986 in Chicago when I was 16 I am now 40 and I love them still as I did then…I also share the name of a Great writer who has written much on the Smiths and Moz..I need this CD…Please Please Please let me get what I want:)

  60. Gotta be “Girlfriend in a Coma”; my wife hates the song — which sometimes — makes it that much better %^)

  61. “How Soon Is Now”. Johnny Marr’s driving, powerful, ethereal guitar sound coupled with Morrissey’s haunting, determined lyrics and vocals. Loved this song since I first heard it late night on Chicago’s Wxrt in ’85 while studying at DePaul.

  62. What difference does it make? and about the cd : hand it over, hand it over, hand it over :D

  63. “Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me.”

  64. Ask is my fave. “How could I?”

  65. I am partial to “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want”. Probably my favorite Smiths song. Also, love the Deftones cover.

  66. Should be a great comp

  67. There is a light that never goes out……hands down

  68. my favourite song is “there is a light that neve goes out” because it changed my life in many ways and it changed the way I understand Music.

  69. I started something I couldn’t finish. At very high volume. Extra bass.
    Bigmouth strikes again.
    Suffer little children.
    The queen is dead.
    Reel around the fountain.
    Meat is murder.

Ok. I’ll stop. I’d just name everything.

  70. stop me if you think that you’ve heard this one before.

  71. gimme! that’s my hubby on the drums on track 11 and he doesn’t even have a copy! :)

best smith song ever = how soon is now.

  72. Maybe some sort of remix album would serve The Smiths music better. Still interesting to get different takes on classic songs.

  73. Mary Anne Tom

Would love to win this as a bday gift for my brother, who is such a big Smiths/Morrisey fan!

My personal fav song is “How Soon is Now,” for the searing guitar riff and the gothy mood/voice that always strikes me the same way it has for so many years. One of the most dramatic songs ever. ;)

  74. Reel Around the Fountain!!! ….What amazing lyrics!! I dreamt about you last night, and I fell out of bed twice, you can pin and mount me, like a butterfly!!! AHHHH!! SOOO TRUE!! I want to CRY!!!!

  75. Chris Davanzo

I literally am unable to answer this question. For every other of my fave bands/artists, there is always one song that I can easily deem my favorite, but w/regard to The Smiths’ catalog, I find it quite literally impossible. Every time I think “yep…this one…it’s my fave…” then another song starts to play in the dark recesses of my mind and I think “wait…no…maybe that one…”, then another plays…and another. I’ve never quite had that dilemma before but I just cannot settle.

Overall, I would have to say “How Soon is now”, “There is a light…”, and “Reel around the fountain”…but see…there go those others playing in my head (“This Charmin Man”, “The Boy with the thorn…”, etc.)… *sigh*

  76. Carlos Grangrade II

A soothing slow mix of love like a shared glass of fine wine !!

  77. I wish I could narrow it down to one song. I can’t. At least I can narrow it down to one album. After all these years, the cd I keep going back to the most is Hatful Of Hollow…what a nice bridge between the debut and then Meat Is Murder.

  78. Handsome Devil.. A dirty song for a dirty boy.

  79. I don’t think I would have that non-hit song as a favourite in this case, so I’ll go with Meat Is Murder.

  80. This album sounds great! Looking forward to hearing it, whether I win or not. My favourite Smoths song is probably “Bigmouth Strikes Again” from THE QUEEN IS DEAD. It’s so bitter and yet also funny.

  81. To die by your side is such a heavenly way to die… i love it so much! I love this song: It’s so delicate and so intense at the same time.

  82. Still love The Smiths. Bigmouth Strikes Again is my fav and there’s usually someone in my reality that reminds me of the song on a daily basis.

  83. My fave is “Stop Me if You Think that You’ve Heard this One Before.” Thanks for the giveaway.

  84. Alexandra gloede

How soon is now is my fab

  85. “Some girls are bigger than others” and oh, this little disc would SO make my day. Sigh.

  86. Alexandra gloede

    Girlfriend in à coma
