The members of R.E.M. marked today’s release of the 25th anniversary edition of Fables of the Reconstruction by looking to their future, announcing they’ve “just completed recording their next record in Berlin.”

In an e-mail to out to fans earlier today, R.E.M. manager Bertis Downs reports on the follow-up to 2008’s Accelerate: “To my ears, it all sounds like quite a wonderful set of songs.”

The band spent much of June at Berlin’s Hansa Studios with producer Jacknife Lee “putting the finishing touches on songs that evolved over the course of two previous recording sessions” in Portland last year and New Orleans earlier this year.

The members of R.E.M. now plan to reconvene in the fall to mix the record, according to today’s e-mail to fans, and while a release date hasn’t been set for the band’s yet-to-be-named 15th studio album, “all signs are pointing towards spring 2011.”
