Sonic Youth planning new studio album, ‘Daydream Nation’ live DVD in 2010

Sonic Youth, 'Daydream Nation'

The members of Sonic Youth will be looking forward and backward in 2010, guitarist Lee Ranaldo says, as the band plans to both record a follow-up to this year’s The Eternal and release a live DVD of the group performing 1988’s classic Daydream Nation.

Additionally, Ranaldo this week told the BBC that before SY records its next studio album, it’ll have to finish working on the soundtrack to an unnamed “French teen film.” Ranaldo said, “We’re probably going back into the studio next year.”

As for the Daydream Nation DVD, Ranaldo said the band plans to combine footage from its 2007-2008 full-album performances with historic footage filmed around the time of that record’s release.

The guitarist added:

“We’re doing a big archival house clean right now. We’ve got a massive archive of audio and video that’s sitting in our studio in Hoboken. We’ve got somebody in there who’s noting every single thing down and making a massive database, and then we’re going to start digitising it because some of the tapes are 30 years old now.”

In other Sonic Youth news, Thurston Moore will perform a one-off concert with that reclusive one-named weirdo Jandek on April 29 in Portland, Ore., in what’s sure to be one of the more talked-about gigs of 2010. Get your tickets here.
