One of the last C86 acts left standing, Primal Scream next year will perform its 1991 classic Screamadelica — the album that saw Bobbie Gillespie and Co. trade their indie-pop sound for house-influenced, druggy dance-rock — in its entirety during a series of live dates in Australia, New Zealand and the U.K.
Primal Scream earlier this year announced a pair of concerts Nov. 26 and 27 at London’s Olympia that would see the band running through the Andrew Weatherall-produced album — featuring the hits “Loaded,” “Come Together” and “Movin’ On Up” — backed by a gospel choir, a full horn section and original Screamadelica guest vocalist Denise Johnson.
Now those plans have expanded to include 20th anniversary performances on the traveling Big Day Out festival, which includes six stops between Jan. 21 and Feb. 6 in New Zealand and Australia, and seven more U.K. concerts beginning March 14 in Leeds and ending March 25 back in London once again (see full tour dates below).
The tour is somewhat ironic, given that Primal Scream bassist Gary “Mani” Mounfield, formerly of The Stone Roses, recently berated ex-Freebass bandmate Peter Hook for “hawking his mate’s corpse around to get paid,” a dig at the former Joy Division bassist’s recent Ian Curtis tribute concerts, at which he’s performing Unknown Pleasures.
