Video: U2 and Jay-Z perform rare ‘October’ track ‘Scarlet’ at New Zealand concert

Irish megastars U2 resumed their colossal 360° Tour in Auckland, New Zealand, last night, and surprised fans by digging very, very deep into their catalog, performing “Scarlet,” off 1981’s October, for the first time in 29 years — and only the second time ever, according to U2gigs.com.

Bono and Co. dedicated the track to recently freed Burmese political opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, while opening act Jay-Z rapped over the near-wordless song (its recorded lyrics are simply Bono crooning “Rejoice!” over and over).

Just attended U2 360 degree concert in Auckland . Absolutely outstanding -truly lived up to their reputation as superstars. Their tribute of ‘One Tree Hill’ to the 29 Miners who perished was particularly poignant. The ‘duet’ with Jay-Z with regards to the rare appearance of Scarlett was a very special touch. All in all a great night with a fantastic play list.

  2. No disrespect if you guys liked this(and thank for the video, I love your site), but it just doesn’t fit. I’m tired of media whores like Jay-Z and Kanye trying to inject themselves into rock culture. You have nothing in common with it. They can’t do real tours on their own, so they try to jump on the rock bandwagon and make the big money that U2 and other acts make. Do you think that Jay or Kanye would jump on stage at a Black Mountain or Imperial Teen show? Hell no.
