33 songs for 33 miners: Pixies play marathon set in Santiago, Chile, to celebrate rescue

In the midst of a South American tour, the Pixies arrived in Santiago, Chile, on Tuesday night, just as the first of the 33 trapped miners were being dramatically rescued after spending two months underground in a collapsed copper and gold mine (“What a night to arrive in Chile!” Black Francis tweeted).

The following night — last night — the reuntied band took the stage at Santiago’s Teatro La Cupula for its first-ever headlining date in Chile, and proceeded to celebrate the successful rescue of all 33 miners by playing an epic 33-song set (plus a two-song encore) that’s being billed as the longest concert ever played by the Pixies.

In a press statement issued today, Black Francis says:

“We were so moved by this story, by how many lives had been affected by this, and how the Chilean people banded together to support what can only be described as a miracle.  We wanted to do something to show how affected we were by this, so we played a special set at tonight’s show, 33 songs for the 33 miners, the longest set we’ve ever played as a band.  We found out five minutes before we went on stage that all of the miners had safely reached the surface.  This was definitely one of the most meaningful show we’ve ever played.”

Above, in a clip provided by the band, you can see Francis introduce the set in Spanish, and announce that they’ll be playing 33 songs — one for each miner — before the band plows into Bossanova opener “Cecilia Ann.” Below, you’ll find some more fan-shot clips from the show, plus the full setlist. The their South American trek now finished, the Pixies head to Mexico for shows in Mexico City and Guadalajara this weekend.
