The Cars post clip of ‘Sad Song,’ reunited band’s second new track in 23 years

The Cars in the studio, circa 2010

The surviving members of The Cars continue to cryptically reveal their reunion via Facebook, first posting a photo of the band in the studio last summer (above), then proceeding with short teasers of new music, the second of which, a 56-second video clip of a new tune called “Sad Song,” was posted yesterday.

The brand-new track, with a chugging guitar riff and vocals by Ric Ocasek, is accompanied by computer animation of handclaps and musical instruments, plus spelled-out lyrics such as “It’s just a sad song that pulls you along/It’s just a sad song and it won’t take long.”

In October, the band — Ocasek, guitarist Elliot Easton, long-retired drummer David Robinson and keyboardist Greg Hawkes, who also is filling in on bass for the late Benjamin Orr, who died of cancer in 2000 — posted a 1:13-long video clip of the new song “Blue Tip,” the first new Cars song since 1987’s Door to Door.
