World Party cancels SXSW and NYC gigs, but promises ‘whole tour of the U.S.A.’

Karl Wallinger of World Party

Citing “unforeseen illness,” the Karl Wallinger-led World Party today canceled upcoming concerts in New York City and at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, that were to have opened this year’s 25th anniversary celebration — but promised to “return this summer for a whole tour of the U.S.A.”

The canceled gigs include at least three planned performances at SXSW next week, plus two dates in New York City; a show in Boston already had been canceled in late February (see dates below). A post on Wallinger’s website says, “World Party will resume promotion in the U.S. in May and throughout the summer with a full tour.”

Last month, Wallinger announced plans to release a 4-to-5 CD World Party box set this spring “packed with unreleased studio gems and live recordings” via his own label, Seaview Records. The box set will be preceded by an all-new World Party song. No release date or tracklist has been announced for the 25th anniversary project.
