Depeche Mode’s ‘Remixes 2: 81-11,’ featuring Vince Clarke and Alan Wilder, due in June

Depeche Mode, circa 2011

The long-rumored new remix album from Depeche Mode — titled Remixes 2: 81-11, and featuring contributions from former members Vince Clarke and Alan Wilder — will be released in single CD, triple-disc, digital and six-LP configurations on June 7, the synthpop vets announced this morning.

The collection, a sequel to 2004’s Remixes 81-04, marks the first time all five current and former DM members have worked on the same project, and it’s the first time either Clarke or Wilder have remixed tracks for their ex-bandmates (Clarke handles “Behind the Wheel” and Wilder takes on “In Chains,” although neither is featured on the single-disc set).

Other artists handling remix duties on the 37-track set, which spans tracks from 1981’s Speak & Spell through 2009’s Sounds of the Universe, include UNKLE, Röyksopp, M83, Miike Snow, Dan the Automator, François Kevorkian and many more (full tracklist below). The set will be preceded by a single release of Violator smash “Personal Jesus,” which appears in three different forms across the expanded 3CD set.

PREVIOUSLY ON SLICING UP EYEBALLS

  1. Hmmm. 3 mixes of “Personal Jesus” but no “Enjoy the Silence.” And only one mix across all three discs that was actually done in the 80s.

  2. Looks like a less-interesting selection of older mixes than the previous collection had, especially with the lack of a rarities download pack, but it’s weighed pretty heavily towards new mixes anyway and I wasn’t even sure if there would be any older mixes on it.

Also dreading yet another DM release where the CDs are compressed and clipped to hell. At least the vinyl is always mastered fine.

  3. A Mute Fan (Honest!)

Mute Executive 1: “Christmas is in eight months… Is Depeche Mode going to release an album by then?”

    Mute Executive 2: “Let’s see… Nope….”

Mute Executive 1: “Are you kidding me?! These fuckers are the only reason we’ve been in the black for the last thirteen years at least! You think owning the rights to Throbbing Gristle’s back catalogue ever made us a dime?!”

Mute Executive 2: “Well, let’s just crap out another DM remix album like we did a few years ago! That should make up for the lost revenues that years of releasing all this artsy bullshit caused.”

Mute Executive 1: “Hey- what the fuck are Vince Clark and Alan Wilder doing? If those two has-beens can add a track or two, we’ll probably increase sales by 15-20%!”

Mute Executive 2: “I’ll do you one better! Let’s make a limited edition box set! That way we can justify charging an arm and a leg for a bunch of inferior remixes that super-fans (re: suckers) can’t help but pay an inflated price for! Vince and Alan’s tracks will only be on that, which means the collectors will have NO CHOICE but to buy the expensive, oh wait- “expansive” box set!”

Mute Executive 1: “Hey- don’t you think it’s this kind of exploitation of the music consumer that eventually lead the music industry to crash and burn, leaving the shell that it currently is today?”

Mute Executive 2: “That’s the kind of talk that gets people fired around here, Frank.”

(I’ll be buying the three-disc set, because I am one of the ‘super-fans’ that these hypothetical executives clearly had in mind. ;))

  4. I’ll probably end up picking up the 3-disc version, too. I’m a really big fan of the Monolake remix of The Darkest Star and am looking forward to Vince and Alan’s contributions.

  5. Very disappointing track list – Bix is right, the last compilation was better. I was really looking forward to this too. Why would I pay for three discs of which I already own 2/3s of the songs?

And they remixed the Bejesus out of Enjoy the Silence the last go around even releasing more versions on CD single.

  6. The 3rd disc is the only one worth getting, with the exception of the Darren Price remix on disc 1. The rest is all club wank crap. The best DM remixes were not the club/house/cheese techno (ahem, stargate), but rather everything else. The ENO mixes didn’t even make this friggin list. This compliation is almost insulting to be brutally honest about it.

A Mute Fan is totally off in his conversation with himself, although I agree with some of his points.. the vince and alan stuff came about due to 1 reason, martin and it was just happy coincidence. Pity it was nothing more. Disgusting that they make you buy the 3 disc edition to get what you really want.

Mute is about art. Independance. Creativity. Cut the f__king BS club mixes and give us the forward looking cult inspiring material fans want.

I’ve never been so disappointed in my favorite band. Thing is, I blame Fletch for alot of this. Hell, he probably picked the final playing order.

  7. The 3rd disc in the 3 disc set, should be the single disc version. Pure and simple. Fuck you Mute, you’re losing it. Greatest label ever, fucking loosing it. Thanks for ruining my day with this corporate shoveled bullshit.

  8. Behind the Wheel (Vince Clark remix)…. squeee!

  9. I am a huge Depeche fan, and I loved the remixes up until around the Ultra album when they went seriously downhill. Sticking a loop of Daves voice on top of a club beat is not my idea of a good remix and is not worthy of my money.

I won’t be buying this remix box set, I already have 50% of the material from when they released it before. Why do mute think it’s ok to re-release stuff like this?

I must admit I seriously couldn’t wait to hear Vinces mix of Behind the Wheel….but now I have :-(
