BACKSTORY: This week sees the release of the first new album in 24 years by the surviving members of the New Wave pop powerhouse: singer-keyboardist Ric Ocasek, guitarist Elliot Easton, long-retired drummer David Robinson and keyboardist Greg Hawkes, who also is filling in on bass for the late Benjamin Orr. 'Upside Down: The Creation Records Story'RELEASE: “Upside Down: The Creation Records Story”
BACKSTORY: Alan McGee’s legendary Creation Records label — home to The Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub, The House of Love and Oasis — is the subject of this new documentary, out this week in the U.K. on Region 2 DVD and Blu-ray. A 2CD soundtrack also arrives this week in the U.K., featuring the aforementioned bands and many more. (See film’s trailer here.)

RELEASES: Automatic, Honey’s Dead
BACKSTORY: The Mary Chain’s third and fourth full-lengths — originally released in 1989 and 1992, respectively — are reissued this week in limited-edition, 180-gram audiophile vinyl pressings. The former album features the singles “Head On” and “Blues From a Gun,” while the later includes the controversial “Reverence” plus “Far Gone and Out.”

BACKSTORY: Sony Legacy’s budget-priced best-of series tackles Matt Johnson and Co. this week, assembling a 14-track collection that spans cuts from 1983’s Soul Mining to 1995’s Hanky Panky, including “Uncertain Smile” (12-inch mix), “The Beat(en) Generation,” “Slow Emotion Replay,” “Sweet Bird of Truth” and “Infected.”
