In the six months since launching the Slicing Up Eyeballs show on Strangeways Radio, we’re frequently asked why the program isn’t available as a download or podcast — and the short answer is that Strangeways, like any legit online radio outlet, can’t do that because of royalty and licensing issues.
Yet knowing that people can’t always make time for appointment listening — the show’s on at 10 p.m. EDT Tuesdays and 2 p.m. EDT Fridays… hint, hint — we’re launching a monthly mixtape series called Auto Reverse. In true throwback fashion, each mix will feature two 45-minute “sides” that can be streamed or downloaded via the player below.
This month’s debut installment features a cross-selection of some of the best tracks culled from the first six months of the Strangeways show (songs new, old and rare by the likes of Wire, The The, Bernard Sumner and more), plus some other odds and ends tossed in (see full playlist below). Totally awesome dude! Gotta come up with some cool names and themes for the tapes though. All part of a mix masters’ process.
– Finger queue tape
– Insert in player
– Press pause/play/record
– Drop the needle
– release pause the millisecond after the needle makes contact with the record…
So much better than itunes…. :)
Almost forgot – on the last song of each side – pray you have enough time to fit the full song in and, in some cases – get ready to work some fade magic with the record volume, to try and save the tape. No way you’d record over a tape that had already been used… If you were going to do that you might as well have just bought a case of memorex tapes… But no – you went with a 90 min maxell gold or possibly a 100 min dennon (120s were a big no, no). Why? Because you care!..

Great !! My MIXTAPEs were called ETCS, and were never labeled: each tape was a total surprise for the listener, each and every time, like radio programming. I guess I recorded 50 ETCS tapes or so.
