Peter Hook: New Order planning U.S. tour, reuniting ‘for financial reasons mainly’

An increasingly bitter Peter Hook continues to lash out at his former bandmates, saying he wants to “fuck New Order over in any possible way I can” and that he believes the band — which is reuniting without him for a pair of European charity gigs later this month — is now planning to mount a full American tour as well.

Hook made the comments to Spinner (via NME), saying he believes his former bandmates are planning to play more than just their announced shows on Oct. 17 in Brussels and Oct. 18 in Paris, benefits for the ailing Michael H. Shamberg, who produced the videos for “True Faith” and “Regret.”

He tells the NME:

“It’s all bollocks. They’re already hawking for an American tour; me mate told me yesterday. They’re hiding behind the charity gig. It’s going to be a hard thing for them to pull off, but they’re doing it for financial reasons mainly.”

The upcoming shows — featuring a lineup of Bernard SumnerStephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert, plus 2000s-era guitarist Phil Cunningham and Bad Lieutenant bassist Tom Chapman — will be New Order’s first since 2006, and Gilbert’s first with the band since 2001.

Hook also tells the NME that the negative reaction from Joy Division fans to his decision in the last couple years to tour that band’s beloved catalog has “scared off a lot of people I wanted to work with, which made me all the more determined.”

He adds:

“It’s the same thing with New Order deciding to tour without me. It makes me all the more determined to fuck New Order over in any possible way I can. If they think I’m just going to scuttle off to a cabin in the woods, they’ve got another thing coming. They’re dickheads. People go and hide, but I don’t. I’m a fighter. I’m going to come out fighting.”

New Order has made no announcement about its plans beyond the two European concerts.

  1. Jesus! I used to LOVE Peter Hook! The things he says now make me sick to my stomach, and I have no issues with him touring on J.D. music. Even if you can’t get along, don’t act like THIS in public….please!

  2. What an a-hole. Really…get over yourself. You’re just making yourself look like a total d-bag. “They are touring for financial reasons”….um HELLO? That’s what ALL bands tour for you idiot. Go comb your hair and shut up. Not that New Order is all that great live, in fact, they’re not…they’re horrible live, but that’s not the point.

  3. and p.s.

What were you touring the Joy Division songs for huh? If not for money? Out of some kindness? Please.

  4. Agreed on all points, Craig. Especially the hair maintenance one.

  5. If my old band were touring w/o me, I’d be mad, too. But if you’d have shut up and played the victim, you wouldn’t have ruined your rep and burned bridges.

  6. I’m sure this jackass toured Joy Division songs for financial reasons only.

  7. Awesome. I will gladly pay to see them without Hooky.

  8. I will always love Joy Division and New Order….but Peter Hook performing JD songs without Ian Curtis is upsetting and it’s funny that he’s upset that New Order is touring without him…He’s doing the same fucking thing, there is no Joy Division without Ian….

  9. But i would totally see New Order if they come to America!!!

  10. What a douchelord!

  11. I suspect a New Order tour would be very successful with or without Mr. Hook. Too bad he won’t be a part of it, but that band still has a tremendous following on the goodwill of its ’80s output alone. I’d gladly go see them again, just to hear those great songs fill up the night air once more.

  12. Such a great bass player, such a twat of a person.

  13. I’d rather see a New Order with a Hooky replacement (ie. the bad lieutenant bassist) than with that shit Billy Corgan trying to sub for Gillian. So glad she’s back in the mix. And when it comes down to it, there are tons of bass players that can play Hook’s bass lines almost identical to him.

Hooky, you can keep Moby on your side too. New Order doesn’t need anyone to play before them.

  14. and the problem with touring for money is… ?? what a bitter, irrelevant hypocrite. i’d pay to see gillian, stephen and bernard anytime. come to america already.

  15. Relax, you folks are overreacting–did you read the whole article? He was joking, in that dark Mancunian manner. At the end he says that if they called him up he’d play with them.

  16. As long as Hooky keeps giving us great shows — and he definitely has. I attended Unknown in LA 2010 and 2011, also attended Closer 2011. I would keep going back to see Hooky each time he returns.

I would also go see New Order — with or w/o Hooky. My last NO show was Technique 1989. So very eager to see the band again.

All this chatter is just nonsense and seves as extra enterttainment!

  17. Why doesn’t Peter just re-join the band and tour with them and give us fans what we want ??????

  18. Loving’ Barney’s pregnant pose in that pic.
