OMD set to begin work on next album ‘English Electric’ in early December

After extensive touring in support of their 2010 comeback History of Modern, reunited synthpop favorites Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark will return to the studio early next month to begin work on a follow-up, already titled English Electric, according to a post on the band’s Facebook page credited to Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys.

Posted yesterday, that message reads:

“We are planning to be in the studio in early December to start collating our ideas and expand upon the music we already began writing together earlier this year. The next album entitled English Electric is starting to take shape. Andy and Paul”

Last year’s well-received History of Modern was OMD’s first new album since 1996’s Universal and its first with its classic lineup — original members McCluskey, Humphreys, Martin Cooper and Malcolm Holmes — since 1986’s The Pacific Age.

The group toured heavily in 2010 and 2011, including that lineup’s first U.S. concerts since opening for Depeche Mode’s breakthrough Music for the Masses shows.

  1. History of Modern was a nice combination of their classic earlier period sound with their later Sugar Tax/Liberator sound. Saw them in concert in Orlando this past tour, was amazed at the energy they put out, considering their age. I’d seen Erasure just 3 weeks prior to OMD, and OMD blew Erasure away.

  2. Saw two OMD shows on the recent tour, one in Chicago and one in Dallas. They were at the top of their game. They are a great live show, and the new stuff was just as good as the old, which is often not the case when these 80s acts take to the road. Looking forward to the new album for sure.

  3. Saw OMD in SLC. Great, great show. Sadly, I did NOT like their last record. In fact, there is a hidden track on History of Modern called “YAWWWN”. C’mon boys, let’s get minimalist in your next record!!!!
