The Cure to headline ‘series of major European music festivals’ this summer

The Cure won’t be going back into hibernation following last year’s sudden burst of activity, as Robert Smith tonight announced on the band’s website that, “The Cure will be headlining a series of major European music festivals this summer.” Booking announcements will be made on TheCure.com simultaneously with the festivals’ sites — and the first three confirmations are coming Monday.

Smith didn’t say anything else about the band’s 2012 performances, although a distorted map of Europe was included on the post, leading to speculation on fansite Chain of Flowers that it might show the locations of The Cure’s festival bookings this summer.

Re-enlisting keyboardist Roger O’Donnell and, on occasion, his predecessor Lol Tolhurst, The Cure last year performed a series of “Reflections” concerts in Syndey, Los Angeles, New York and London, and also headlined the U.K.’s Bestival. At the end of the band’s final New York show in November, Smith told the crowd, “We’ll see you again next year.”

  1. Bummed I didn’t see Reflections. When’s that DVD being released?!?

  2. Robert also stated in Los Angeles after the Reflection shows that he would see us next year. At this point I’m not really clamoring for a new album… just quality shows like the Reflections shows I was privileged to witness…. probably the finest Cure shows I have seen in my 25 years of Cure fandom!

  3. Glad they’re still plugging away, but this lineup still doesn’t feel complete. They should change the band name to “Everything but the Porl.”

  4. The Cure needs its keyboard player.

Last time they played Chicago, they had generic synth washes, but much of the music seemed pale in comparison to shows of the past. The keyboard is key to recreating that perfect 80s gloom.

  5. I would like to see a complete pop comeback for the band and have some new tunes hit the radio with some new fans. That’s the dream really.
