Flipper playing SXSW, handful of U.S. shows — then touring U.K. and Europe this spring

The hugely influential San Francisco punk outfit Flipper is revving back into service this year, with a handful of U.S. dates announced in the coming months along with plans to perform at the South By Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas, this spring followed by a tour of the U.K. and dates in continental Europe in April.

The reunited band — featuring original members Bruce Loose, Ted Falconi and Steve DePace, with bassist Rachel Thoele filling in for the late Will Shatter — announced on its website recently that it planned to start rehearsals in January, then “a quickie in SF, then Austin for SXSW in March and then looking at Europe in April.”

To date, the band only has officially announced a March 2 concert in Oakland with the Dead Kennedys’ East Bay Ray, but venue and ticketing sites confirm Flipper will also play March 29 and 30 in Denver before heading overseas for a four-date tour of the U.K. and, so far, European concerts in Italy and the Netherlands. The band has not yet been announced for SXSW.

Flipper — known for its stripped-down, sludgy rock — reunited in 2005, and has performed sporadically since then, with Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic filling in for Shatter for a time. The group released a studio record and a live album in 2009, but hasn’t toured much since that year.
