Echo & The Bunnymen, The Cult soundtrack Super Bowl commercials for Audi, Budweiser

If you’re planning to watch the Super Bowl later this afternoon, keep your ears open during the commercial breaks: Two ’80s college-rock classics — Echo & The Bunnymen’s “The Killing Moon” and The Cult’s “She Sells Sanctuary” — are soundtracking a pair of high-profile ads for automaker Audi and beer giant Budweiser, respectively.

The clever Audi spot, seen above, adopts something of a “Twilight” tone, with a gathering of young vampires cavorting around a campfire waiting for a friend to arrive — in his Audi, of course — with a cooler full of fresh blood as “The Killing Moon” plays over it all.

The Budweiser commercial, also seen above, mashes up the instrumental of “She Sells Sanctuary” with the vocals from rapper Flo Rida’s “Good Feeling,” presenting “a celebratory romp through several decades of great times in America that begins with the end of Prohibition in 1933.”

  1. Also worth noting about the Audi commercial is the appearance of former Possum Dixon frontman Rob Zabrecky as one of the vampires.

The Audi commercial was pretty ridiculous. Though i’m not too keen on the Cult and Flo Rida, it wasn’t all that bad and fit the spirit of the commercial, feeling-wise more so than the first one.

  3. That Bud commercial features the most atrocious mash-up ever! MY EARS! THEY HURT!
