Uncle Green finishes lost 1997 album ‘Rycopa,’ will play CD-release show in Atlanta

Reunited late-’80s Atlanta college rockers Uncle Green — who rechristened themselves 3 lb. Thrill during a major-label stint in the ’90s — will take the stage this weekend to celebrate a somewhat improbable feat: the release of their once-lost seventh album, a 32-song, double-disc set that’s been tied up in record-label limbo for 14 years.

The four members of Uncle Green/3 lb. Thrill, as the band is now credited, recorded Rycopa in the spring of 1997 during a two-month session at their home studio in Atlanta, only to have the album rejected by their label and the master tapes shuttled off to a Sony-owned warehouse in upstate New York, where they’d reside until the band tracked them down in 2011.

The band’s manager helped wrangle the tapes back last year, and after raising nearly $7,000 via Kickstarter, the album was mastered and self-released. The record is available at local shops in the Atlanta area, and can be purchased online via CDBaby. Below, you can stream the first two tracks from the album: “Not in Range” and “Pretty Good Lie.”

And with Rycopa finally finished and released, Uncle Green/3 lb. Thrill will celebrate the achievement with a gig on Saturday at Smith’s Olde Bar in Atlanta.

  1. Not quite up to Book of Bad Thoughts quality. Saw them on that tour with the Levellers in Atlanta, great band.
