Slim Dunlap, guitarist for The Replacements, recovering from stroke, is ‘sharp and aware’

Beloved Twin Cities musician Slim Dunlap, who joined The Replacements following the expulsion of Bob Stinson and played guitar on the band’s last two albums, remains hospitalized this week after suffering a “severe” stroke that has, according to his wife, left the 60-year-old partially paralyzed, but still “sharp and aware.”

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Dunlap’s wife, Chrissie Dunlap, posted on her Facebook page on Sunday night that her husband earlier that “suffered a right middle cerebral artery stroke. He then fell and hit his head, resulting in a left vertebral artery dissection and a right subarachnoid hemorrhage.”

She continues:

“The good news is that he is sharp and aware, his speech is fine, and all of the nurses and doctors have commented on his unique sense of humor. The bad news is that he cannot move the right side of his body and will be in for some serious rehab. They will be giving him more tests tomorrow to determine the extent of the damage. I will try to post updates as we learn more. Louie will be with him all night and I will be back there tomorrow. We don’t need a thing but your good wishes for his full recovery.”

This morning, Dunlap’s daughter, Delia, posted on The Slim Dunlap Fan Club page on Facebook:

“Thank you so much for sending so much love for my dad and the rest of my family. We are still learning more about the stroke and how it will affect my dad’s health but every day there have been positive signs that my dad will get better. My dad has spent his entire life helping others and trying to bring happiness to everyone around him so even if he wouldn’t like all the attention, I know that this overwhelming support will help him recover. Thank you again and keep it coming! Love, Delia”

Dunlap joined the Mats just after the recording of 1987’s Pleased To Meet Me, and played on Don’t Tell a Soul and All Shook Down. Following the 1991 break-up of the band, Dunlap recorded a pair of solo albums in the mid-’90s, and has remained active in the Twin Cities music scene.
