‘First Time I Heard’ e-books spotlight The Smiths, Joy Division, New Order, Kate Bush

Novelist Scott Heim’s new e-book series “The First Time I Heard” follows a simple concept: ask musicians to expound on their first experiences with their own formative bands. And the results are impressive, with the likes of The Wedding Present’s David Gedge writing about Joy Division and New Order, Pylon’s Vanessa Briscoe Hay weighing in on David Bowie, and Lush’s Miki Berenyi contributing her thoughts on The Smiths.

The series launched this summer, and, so far, titles are available through the usual online book channels on Joy Division/New Order, The Smiths, Cocteau Twins and David Bowie. Next month sees publication of a title on Kate Bush, with books due in spring and summer 2013 on Abba, My Bloody Valentine, Kraftwerk, Pixies, R.E.M. and Roxy Music.

Other contributors to Heim’s series include members of Throwing Muses, Shudder to Think, Mercury Rev, Slowdive, Swervedriver, Clan of Xymox, Trash Can Sinatras and many, many more.

For more information, check out the “First Time I Heard” Facebook page or watch Heim’s video, posted below, from the Kickstarter campaign that is funding the project.

  5. Great project. I too just wish they were available in paperback. Wonder if he knows he can use a self publishing service like lulu.com or others to print for free? I want to read these but NOT on a screen.
