‘Best of Cutting Edge’ DVD to feature R.E.M., Hüsker Dü, Squeeze, X, The Smithereens

This fall, Miles Copeland will bring MTV’s beloved “120 Minutes” precursor “I.R.S. Records Presents The Cutting Edge” to DVD with a new compilation featuring “the absolute highlights and rare moments” from the show, featuring appearances by the likes of R.E.M., Hüsker Dü, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Robyn Hitchcock and more.

The “Best of Cutting Edge” DVD is due out Oct. 16 on the IRS Records founder’s Copeland International Arts imprint, but it’s not yet clear whether this is an entirely new compilation of the series’ highlights or simply a combination of the two long-out-of-print “The Best of The Cutting Edge” VHS tapes that were released in the early ’90s (you can watch Vol. II below).

The show, sponsored by IRS Records, ran from 1983 to 1987 on MTV, airing the last Sunday of each month — and receiving a new name, “The Cutting Edge Happy Hour,” toward the end of its run. Although it initially featured a range of hosts, the “Cutting Edge” is most well known for being MC’d by Peter Zaremba, lead singer of The Fleshtones.

According to the sell sheet provided to record stores, the DVD will feature the following artists:

Squeeze
R.E.M.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Robyn Hitchcock
Tom Waits
The Blasters
Stan Ridgway
Hüsker Dü
X
The Alarm
The Fleshtones
Hoodoo Gurus
Jonathan Richman
The Smithereens
The db’s
Let’s Active
Henry Rollins

  1. A thousand thank yous!

  2. You must stay till the end for a great version of X’s classic, I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts, thanks eyeballs.

  3. This is welcome news…but damn!, couldn’t they just have put the whole series out? Thing only lasted a couple years, or so… would have fit on 2 or 3 discs. Still, I’m not complaining. The R.E.M. segment that was on the “When the Light is Mine” compilation from a few years back is a classic. One thing i do see missing from the list is Morrissey …another absolute classic! oh well, watch it here….http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPX39Mledz4

  4. Yay. It was always a joy to watch it, as it aired right before The Young Ones.

  5. Where’s the Cramps? The Halloween segment of Lux Interior playing with creepy 50’s toys was the highlight of the entire series.

  6. This DVD is transferred from the VHS tapes. Disappointing.
