Stream: Wire, ‘Doubles & Trebles’ — first track off upcoming ‘Change Becomes Us’ LP

U.K. post-punk legends Wire this week offered up the first taste of their upcoming 13th album Changes Becomes Us in the form of opening track “Doubles & Trebles,” which is apparently a reworking of a previously unreleased song called “Ally in Exile.” Which makes sense, as the album is being build as “exploration of unrecorded material originally written in 1979-80.”

Below, you can stream the track, which premiered at Pitchfork and The Quietus.

The Quietus also announced that it will be working with Wire — featuring core members Colin NewmanGraham Lewis and Robert Grey. plus new guitarist Matt Simms — on a series of events in London this March called WIRE:DRILL that will conclude with a full performance of Change Becomes Us at Heaven on March 24, the day before the album is released in the U.K.

This fits right onto Chairs Missing in terms of songwriting and tone, the mix is much more modern though. I don’t think it really adds anything to process Colin’s voice. Decent enough though, I think Wire has done quite well with their new work- faring much better than Gang Of Four.

  2. I was just going to write that…this sounds like it’s directly off of Chairs Missing.

  3. Can’t wait, sounds awesome. Red Barked Tree was brilliant, it will be nice to hear these older ideas fleshed out. I can’t think of any period in their history that I didn’t enjoy thoroughly.
