Trent Reznor resurrects Nine Inch Nails for U.S. arena tour, concerts worldwide

Trent Reznor

Four years since retiring the live incarnation of Nine Inch Nails, frontman Trent Reznor this morning announced he is resurrecting the band with a new lineup that includes King Crimson guitar whiz Adrian Belew and former Jane’s Addiction bassist Eric Avery, and will mount a U.S. arena tour this fall and perform dates worldwide in 2014.

In a statement posted at Pitchfork, Reznor reveals that recent work with Belew — who guested on The Downward Spiral — led him to “re-think the idea of what Nine Inch Nails could be.” Ultimately, he crafted a new lineup, and began making plans for extensive touring over the next year.

Reznor’s statement:

NOTE FROM TRENT:

Nine Inch Nails are touring this year.

I was working with Adrian Belew on some musical ideas, which led to some discussion on performing, which led to some beard-scratching, which (many steps later) led to the decision to re-think the idea of what Nine Inch Nails could be, and the idea of playing a show. Calls were made to some friends, lots of new ideas were discussed, and a show was booked – which led to another, which somehow led to a lot of shows.

The band is reinventing itself from scratch and will be comprised of Eric Avery, Adrian Belew, Alessandro Cortini, Josh Eustis, Ilan Rubin, and me. The first shows will begin this summer, followed by a full-on arena tour of the US this fall, and lots of other dates worldwide to follow through 2014.

Lots of details and dates to come. See you soon.

The Nine Inch Nails tour will follow the live debut of Reznor’s other project, How to Destroy Angels, which is playing Coachella and a short run of U.S. dates this spring. The band’s debut album, Welcome Oblivion, is due out March 5, and can be streamed in full at Pitchfork.

  1. CANT WAIT!

and trent while you’re at it, how about that video collection on dvd or blu??

  2. As a NIN fan… Personally?
While the thought – in performance power terms – of seeing Trent Reznor (vox, guitar, keys), Alessandro Cortini (keys), Ilan Rubin (drums, percussion), Adrian Belew (guitar), Eric Avery (bass), Josh Eustis (keys) is utterly insane (in a good way). And hey, if Belew – at his age – ain’t doin Crim for a while but IS lending his mind-bending solo-ness to these guys (and some of that earlier material) then WOW. And two keyboard players. With Cortini back. WOW. So yeah. Wow.
BUT. There’s also a nagging feeling – just a little one – that Trent could be turning into industrial music’s version of Gene Simmonds. How many times can there be a final/farewell/goodbye tour before you’re amazingly resurrected again. And again. And not just live, but in-studio, too?
This will have to be incredible stuff to work. And as other NIN fans have already hinted. What about those live DVDs? Like the full “Wave Goodbye” sets? And the “Closure” DVD for public store release?…

  3. You actually think Cortini is good ? He is barely workmanlike. I was hoping Vrenna & Finck would be back

  4. I am sure the new band is a factor in this but to think money isn’t is beyond naive. This is an arena tour he is talking about, not a theater tour, and then a worldwide tour to follow. I have no problem with this but he isn’t doing this just for the fun of it.

  5. HEADLINE should read – Belew goes on tour! sits in with NIN.

  6. SO the ‘Farewell’ tour in 2009 was more of a BS tour… too funny. I figured he would bring NIN back again, just not so soon. But what else can he really do?

  7. Personally, I preferred (based on the footage I saw) Cortini to Clouser meself. Just. Vrenna would be good to see back, but I was equally happy with Jerome Dillon and Josh Freese. And, yeah, Rob Finck was legendary. But then again so is Belew! I have no issue with Trent and the lads continuing, so long as (a) the new presentation and line-up genuinely does something interesting, (b) they finally operate with slightly less mystery and film this new line-up’s shows for DVD and actually release it, instead of teasing everyone for half a decade and (c) they are honest from now on about the potential future of the group.

  8. Must say as well I really loved the whole instrumental/soundtracky-ness thing that they had on “GHOSTS”, and with Trent and Atticus leading into “Social Network” and “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”. More similar sonic explorations, particularly with Belew on-side, would be welcomed.

  9. It’s too bad Aaron North couldn’t keep it together. He was great on guitar from 05 to 07.

  10. I have seen Aaron North ” play” He was mostly jumping around & acting like a rock star. With the exception of Belew & Trent, the band seems pretty bland to me.

  11. Just listened to the Welcome Oblivion stream from How to Destroy Angels….Im a fan. http://smarturl.it/HTDAWelcomeOblivion
