Morrissey cancels U.S. tour over ongoing medical problems: ‘I hope this isn’t the end’

Morrissey

Morrissey’s trouble-plagued and oft-postponed North American tour has come to an end as Pitchfork reports the former Smiths singer, citing “medical mishaps,” has decided to pull the plug on the remaining 24 dates of the trek, a good number of which already had been rescheduled not once but twice since originally being set last fall.

UPDATE 3/16/13: According to a statement posted to True to You on Saturday, there are “no plans to continue” with Morrissey’s U.S. tour due to his “ongoing medical problems,” and the dates won’t be rescheduled. The singer himself says, “I hope this isn’t the end, and I hope there will be other chances.”

Morrissey’s full statement:

“It takes a lifetime to find the right words, and at the moment, I haven’t got them. I’ve been a colossal pain where this continuously unpredictable illness is concerned, and now the physical limits have been reached. The tour had, in fact, been fantastic for all of us – a new slice of life full of concentrated power. The audiences everywhere have given so much, although I know that neither of us will ever receive our due. I hope this isn’t the end, and I hope there will be other chances, minus the heavy burden of illness. Knots of grief today, but full of resolve for tomorrow.”

The singer’s reps, in a press release issued Friday night, note that Morrissey “has suffered a series of medical mishaps over the past few months including a bleeding ulcer, Barrett’s esophagus and double pneumonia.” Despite his efforts to continue, Moz “has to take a hiatus and will not be able to continue on the rest of the tour.”

The full press statement:

The remaining dates of the Morrissey U.S. North American tour have officially been pulled down due to medical reasons. The singer has suffered a series of medical mishaps over the past few months including a bleeding ulcer, Barrett’s esophagus and double pneumonia.

Despite his best efforts to try to continue touring, Morrissey has to take a hiatus and will not be able to continue on the rest of the tour. Morrissey thanks all of his fans for their well wishes and thoughts. Refunds for the remaining shows are available at point of purchase.

Moz’s tour — derailed for a second time while he underwent treatment for a bleeding ulcer and Barrett’s esophagus — resumed Feb. 27 in San Diego following a dust-up over the singer’s booking on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” He performed six concerts before canceling a San Francisco appearance and announcing he had been diagnosed with double pneumonia.

Earlier on the tour, Morrissey postponed 19 concerts after falling ill Jan. 24 on a trek that already had been rescheduled from last fall, when he abruptly canceled the bulk of the dates to return to England to see his sick mother.

  1. I figured this would happen. I’m glad the dude is taking the rest of the tour off instead of doing shows sick. I just wish I could get my entire refund, but instead I’m gonna be out like twenty bucks for ticketmaster fees ugh.

  2. I was really looking forward to this show. 7th row tickets down the drain. I’m “truly disappointed”. But I guess you could say Moz made the right decision since he’s still ill. His mentality finally caught up with his biology. Perhaps he should check himself into the Y… WCA.

  3. Glad I at least caught him at Radio City. I too will be out my fees for Philly. If he’s not careful he’ll be “first of the gang to die”.

  4. Maybe if he ate right he’d be healthier. Meat is protein and protein strength.

  5. Ate right? Are you kidding me? Humans are not meant to be carnivores. We started eating meat out of necessity, not for the flavor. Gorillas are vegetarians. Do they look unhealthy or like they are lacking muscle tone? In fact, they are one of the strongest and healthiest animals on the face of this planet. And they don’t eat meat. There is plenty of protein in other foods. Stop kidding yourself and go eat another “healthy” burger from McDonald’s.

    • Human ARE meant to eat meat. We have canine teeth, used for ripping flesh. Morrisey is a PETA-brained idiot who has no business (literally) in the US of A. I, for one, will have a beef roast with gravy and green beans and toast this loser leaving the country with a fresh glass of iced tea!!!!

    • I’ve seen gorillas – they’re all a bunch of grouchy, greying, pot-bellied lumps, who spend their time throwing poop and smelling bad.

      Hey, wait a second…!

whenever im sick i just make sure to eat a big bowl of chicken soup with some extra meat. try it out pal. it helps if the chicken had an aweful life and died slowly.

hey there chris. scientists believe that eating meat is what made humans grow bigger brains (if you havent noticed, we’re smarter than apes and i know people will try to spin that and be all “but how come we ruin the planet if we are so smart” but for rillz, we blast rockets into space and they land on other planets. thanks meat). it makes sense to me because vegans are idiots. also, not all meat lives inside hamburgers at mcdonalds. turns out you can raise healthy animals and give them a nice life before slaughtering them for food. actually, its a better life than they would have had in the wild because the food supply is constant, they wont have to worry about freezing to death because of a bad winter, and they wont get slowly mauled to death by a pack of coyotes . nope, just one swift motion and they die.

  8. I love steak. Juicy, rare, bloody deliciousness.
    I love steak.

    Morrisey can’t dance.

  9. Morrissey should donate himself to science immediately, as he now appears to have suffered every disease known to man. Medical students could study him as an encyclopedia of malaise. He’s this generation’s Marcel Proust, but without his work-ethic.

  10. billion nothing

Why do people hate a man just because he speaks up for animals?
read todays article todays ny times about poachers bringing the elephant to edge of extinction. wish there were more brave ones like moz, but there are not.
it’s not really threatening or original to brag that your gonna eat a beef roast. no one thinks you’re clever. try and think of something new.

  11. I like meat, and Moz. In that order.

  12. I don’t eat meat and never get sick, fit as a fiddle!

    Get well soon Moz x

  13. What promoter on earth would have the cojones to book this man in 2013? How can Morrissey afford the completion bond to tour in the first place??!!

  14. gramsci3000

Barrett’s esophagus is no joke–very high rate of terminal
esophagial cancer associated with it. Hope that he doesn’t have
    it.
