‘Scared To Get Happy: A Story of Indie-Pop 1980-1989’ final tracklist: 5 CDs, 134 songs

Back in February, Cherry Red Records unveiled the tracklist for its massive, 5-disc box set Scared To Get Happy: A Story of Indie-Pop 1980-1989 via the project’s Facebook page — and then almost immediately began adding more tracks to the 127-song collection.

Now, Cherry Red swears it’s done tinkering with the lineup, and has released what it promises is the final 134-song tracklist for the collection, which the U.K. label has said is inspired by Lenny Kaye’s classic Nuggets garage-rock compilation and is “devoted to the 1980s indie guitar-pop revolution which swept across the British Isles.”

Due out June 24 in the U.K., the box set has grown in size, but also lost a few songs, including The Pastels’ “I Wonder Why” and The Vaselines’ “Jesus Don’t Want Me For A Sunbeam,” at the artists’ request.  The release will coincide with a concert planned for London on June 22 that will feature The Primitives, BMX Bandits, The Pooh Sticks, Mighty Mighty and other acts included in the box set.

The collection is expected to feature a 72-page booklet and retail for around £50, or about $80.

Check out the full tracklist below, which features contributions from The House of Love, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Prefab Sprout, Josef K, Pulp, Primal Scream, The Mighty Lemon Drops, The Stone Roses, Lloyd Cole and the Commotions, Soup Dragons and many, many more.

UPDATE 4/27/13: The Scared To Get Happy box set is now available on Amazon.co.uk for pre-order — and it’s a pretty great deal at the moment, a total of £30.03 (about $46.49 for a 5-disc box set) to have it shipped to the U.S.

  1. Dolly Mixture is listed twice on the first disc. I’m crazy excited about this box.

  2. I’ve been transported back in time 30 years and am tuning in to John Peel… Don’t think anyone would claim this is the definitive history of indie pop, but you know that’s a pretty good selection.

  3. For once, a pretty impressive tracklist for a box set compilation! I assume these will all be remastered, nice!

  4. It’s a great box and intro to the “genre”/sound. But if you have followed or like Cherry Red, this is like putting together their anniversary collection with the rarities collection and their indie vigils comp.

  5. Once more, I just “bumped into your – EXCELLENT – website looking for some comment about the boxed set by The Clash.
Then I looked for The Jesus And Mary Chain and found this.

By the way, I wonder if I will ever see The Wolfhounds discography properly issued on CD.

  6. only Microdisney, The Would Be Goods and That Petrol Emotion made it from the Emerald Isle eh?! Sultans of Ping FC, Fatima Mansions, Divine Comedy..Here is a link I found that includes some info on other forgotten 80’s acts (though 2 are on this compilation!)http://entertainment.ie/music/feature/Rewind-Forgotten-greats-of-the-80s-Irish-music-scene/201/4339.htm
