Depeche Mode opens ‘Delta Machine’ world tour in Nice, France: Setlist + Video

Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode opened its massive Delta Machine world tour tonight with a 23-song set that featured a healthy dose of material off the new album, the usual crowd pleasers (“Enjoy the Silence,” “Personal Jesus,” set closer “Never Let Me Down Again”) and some welcome callbacks to material that’s been skipped over in recent years.

The set included the first performance of Songs of Faith and Devotion’s “Higher Love” (this time sung by Martin Gore) since 1993, plus the first performances of “Black Celebration” and “Halo” since 2001 and the return of “Just Can’t Get Enough” for the first time since the band’s 2006 tour (see full setlist below).

We’ve begun posting video below as well, and will add more as it surfaces.

  1. Alberto Cabezas

GREAT performance of “Halo”. They are in Top Form. Dave is ageless!

  2. lyndon beale

im a devoted fan and always will be but when are they gonna play for longer than 2 hours they have so much great material 2 hours is not enough time to fit more great tunes in.

  3. black celebration and higher lover are surprising; the rest are pretty standard set list songs

    (7) songs from the new album – YIKES!

Maybe they have more energy live .?.

    • 8 new songs

    • ‘Black Celebration’ has seen plenty of action, this is the 5th tour it’s been played on.

I agree ‘Higher Love’ is a nice surprise, but would be better if Dave sang it.

But where is anything off ‘Broken Frame’, ‘Construction Time Again’, ‘Some Great Reward’, hell even something rare off MFTM like ‘Sacred’, or something off SOFAD like ‘Rush’… DM just play it safe every tour and nothing ever really changes.

      Boring and predictable as usual.

      • I agree with you. Allways the same old songs!! We love Enjoy, Personal Jesus, I feel you, Policy of thruth, Walking in my shoes,A question of time and Never let me down, but stop singing every and every TOUR. With 3 or 4 of them are enough. We miss other old hits or Bides…

      • Here Here!!!

Same conversation I had with my friends when we left – same albums you mentioned.

I think that’s the reason the crowd – and me – went crazy when Just Cant Get Enough came on.

Also, I would love Martin Gore to sing a song WITH some background. ‘Home’ is WAY more powerful with the background rather than acapella – imo – and he’s does it that was EVERY time.

        VARIETY – VARIETY – VARIETY.

It may be disappointing not to hear my fav “Enjoy the Silence”, but it also isn’t unexpected either.

  4. Same old Depeche mode for the last 12 years!! Just get Alan Wilder back and drop both those boring replacements!!! I swear both the Sounds of the Universe and Delta tours are exactly the same……boring as hell!!! No really good oldies to put on the set!!

    • Yep, DM just can’t be bothered to throw any bones to the old school fans. It’s the same hits tour after tour. They won’t be getting my money this time around.

  5. Typical, boring, safe setlist from Depeche Mode as usual. Nothing ‘outside the box’. A few notable changes:

Black Celebration (played on the 1986, 1988, 1990, 2001 tours, hardly rare)

Halo (played on 1990, 1993, 1994, 2001 tours, hardly rare)

Higher Love (the only real ‘shocker’, but sung by Martin?)

Barrel of a Gun (Really? Awful choice)

A Pain That I’m Used to (Really? Out of all the songs they pick this one? Boggles the mind.)

Everything else was standard fare, cookie cutter Depeche Mode and same damn songs played on every tour… 8 New songs? Really guys? Come on…

We all know DM won’t be able to keep up a 23 song set every night, expect it to drop to 20 – 21 songs by the time they get to the USA.

Why are DM so challenged by playing anything really ‘rare’ or something that hasn’t been played in a long time? The only time they do is when Martin butchers a song like ‘Higher Love’ with an accoustic version.

    Ridiculous.

  6. Higher Love with Martin, Barrel Of A Gun, and Black Celebration are highlights for me though not enough to go purchase a ticket for the Delta Machine tour.
Perhaps the second leg next year will be a bit of a surprise? But the remainder of this set-list is a predictable bore for any DM fan who has seen them more than once.
What’s next, a live CD/DVD release after the tour? Please, no.
IMHO Delta Machine is by far the worst DM release.

  7. Jeez, reading the comments above makes me wonder why DM waste their time playing concerts in the Europe & the US to whingey “fans” every tour.
Come to Australia where your fans will be happy & thankful to see you!

    • They play the same setlist in the same places because they only tour every 4 years and the ‘casual’ fans forget, or only care about the ‘hits’.

Depeche Mode have never given a rat’s ass about their ‘hardcore’ fans, they only care about pleasing the majority of the audience.

You think Robert Smith cares about the people there only for the ‘hits’ when he plays 40 songs including bsides, album tracks, etc? Nope. Robert plays something for everyone.

But Depeche Mode? It’s about raking in as much money as possibly every 4 years with a standard ‘greatest hits’ setlist with very few changes – except for new songs.

  8. My point is compare The Cure to DM.

The Cure plays 35 – 40+ song sets, does special ‘full album’ shows, and tours frequently. They change up the setlist every tour and you never know what Robert is going to pull out. Sure, he plays many hits, but also treats the hardcore fans well.

DM? They tour once every 4 years, never do anything ‘special’ and crank out the same ‘greatest hits’ setlist (with slight variations). 20 – 23 songs, Cookie cutter concerts for the last 20 years.

And don’t tell me it’s because Dave has to move around on stage, that is complete BS. Robert sings much more complicated songs and plays guitar!

Hell with Martin singing 3 songs, Dave barely sings 20 songs a night!

DM put on a spectacular show from a visual, energy standpoint – but it’s basically a variation on the same theme and songs every tour. It’s become a joke.

  9. Completely agree with Louis –

In all honesty and in terms of live performances, EVERY live band out there (Rolling Stones included!) could benefit from taking a look at Robert Smith and the way he conducts the Cure.
Not only do they show their fans complete respect but they actually give you your money’s worth for what you want to see!
Really, NO other band comes close to this. Period.

  10. Walking in My Shoes
    Policy of Truth
    A Question of Time
    Enjoy the Silence
    Personal Jesus
    I Feel You
    Never Let Me Down Again

…I’m so sick of hearing these songs live. They’d better keep Black Celebration in the set list by the time they get to the U.S.! It’s too bad they decided to play most of Delta Machine *sigh*. I was afraid they would. Who knows, maybe they’ll get a clue, pay a little attention to what the people who go to their shows are saying and come up with a crazy and awesome set list full of classic Depeche tracks for the second leg of this tour. Here’s to hoping! *fingers crossed*

    • It’s doubtful, fans have been clamoring for a change for every tour since 1993, and DM have yet to deliver.

  11. PS. Just Can’t Get Enough?! Really?!
Of all the earlier songs from their career they choose that one? Every tour is practically a singles tour with Depeche these days. It’s a tired repertoire of same old predictable choices. Next album and tour things are gonna have to change – and for the better.

    • The sales of ‘Delta Machine’ were abysmal, about 43,000 copies in the US. And yet they are playing 8 songs off it? Ridiculous.

  12. giovanny

amazing when robert sang the 13 live really rare track DM should do something like that and sing more b sides and rareties

  13. I cant wait for the US shows. Seeing them play great songs
every four years isnt a bad thing. Robert Smith is awesome for
doing 4 hour bside loaded shows, but no sane band does that… Well
besides the Cure. It’s why we love them.

  14. Louis you are so wrong it’s not even funny. Hell, they sold over 52,000 copies in their first week! If I had to guess, I’d say it’s approaching 200,000 as we speak. Far from “abysmal” in this iTunes age.
