Trent Reznor

Trent Reznor’s resurrected Nine Inch Nails tonight announced it will release a brand-new album titled Hesitation Marks on Sept. 3 — nearly four years to the day after Reznor “retired” the live incarnation of that band with an epic concert at Los Angeles’ Wiltern Theatre.

NIN announced the release — the band’s eighth album, which will bear the catalog number Halo 28 — tonight via Twitter, and it precedes Thursday’s debut of first single “Come Back Haunted,” which is slated to hit U.S. airwaves at 11:30 a.m. Pacific. The album will be NIN’s first since 2008′s The Slip, which was released for free (“This one’s on me,” Reznor said at the time).

UPDATE: The single “Came Back Haunted” leaked, so NIN went ahead and posted it (stream below) — and announced a lengthy fall arena tour of North America called “Tension 2013″ (dates below).

In announcing last week that he’d signed to Columbia Records, Reznor wrote:

“I’ve been less than honest about what I’ve really been up to lately. For the last year I’ve been secretly working non-stop with Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder on a new, full-length Nine Inch Nails record, which I am happy to say is finished and frankly fucking great.  This is the real impetus and motivation behind the decision to assemble a new band and tour again.  My forays into film, (How to Destroy Angels) and other projects really stimulated me creatively and I decided to focus that energy on taking Nine Inch Nails to a new place.  Here we go!”

In February, Reznor announced he was resurrecting NIN with a new lineup that includes King Crimson guitar whiz Adrian Belew and former Jane’s Addiction bassist Eric Avery, and will mount a U.S. arena tour this fall and perform dates worldwide in 2014.

Avery already has quit the band, though, and was replaced by former member Robin Finck.
