Book of Love reunites to record new music, play short run of California shows this fall

Book of Love poster

Synthpop favorites Book of Love — best-remembered for their ’80s singles such as “Boy,” “I Touch Roses” and “Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls” — have reunited to work on new music that’s expected out later this year and are following up a one-off reunion show this past spring in Texas with a short run of California dates this fall.

Original members Ted Ottaviano, Lauren Johnson (formerly Roselli) and Susan Ottaviano performed for the first time in four years this past April at a concert in Houston (see video below). Now the group is working on new music this summer, with plans to debut it at five concerts set for early October in San Francisco and around the Los Angeles area (see dates below).

Singer Susan Ottaviano, in an interview for RockSubculture.com’s podcast, confirms Book of Love is working on new music, but stops short of saying the group will release a follow-up to 1993’s Lovebubble.

“We are working on some new material. We hope to get it finished to debut it as these shows. We’ve got work to do… Right now I think we’re just working on a few songs. We’ll see what will happen with that. … I feel really excited to get started doing this again.”

  1. Shouldn’t the poster read “PLAYING THE HIT”?

  2. Wow! The years have been kind to them.

  3. Come to Atlanta, please please!

  4. You’ll dance to anything by Book of Love…

  5. There wasn’t a bad song on the Book of Love album. The rest of the albums were hit or miss. I went to see them once around 1990 or so. They kept having to stop between songs to put new floppy disks into their keyboards. It was a good show, though.

  6. They still sound and look good!

it was a great show at numbers!!! it almost didnt happen due to weather!!

  8. Numbers was great and the shows in Cali will be too – and it is HITS – they had 4 #1 Club Hit from their first album alone. 3 More from their Second and 1 from their third and 1 from their forth. Hardly a 1 hit wonder.

  9. Awesome band! i can hear Book of Love in so many bands-
    Please come to Minneapolis!

  10. I’m behind the times, like 27 years! I just found out Book of Love is back. I commenced dusting off my “Book of Love” CD and during the third replay, the County Sheriff visited me to warn me about a noise violation.

I admit, I’ve not heard anything but my 80’s CD, but isn’t it awesome? I’ll be looking for their ‘rebirth’ music and dreaming they come to Texas again.

Book of Love’s awesome tunes and razor sharp electronic’s compliments my favorite, their Base… deep, clean, powerful but not overbearing. Their electronic sounds meld together like Tequila in a frozen Margarita. Susan’s distinct “I sing it my way” vocals are strong and firm with a splash of softness (a blind man could identify her by voice). Mix her vocals with the electronic sound of Ted, Laura and Jade and you’ve got cheese… sharp and strong (bad joke). Hey, where’s Jade?

  11. Book of Love is fantastic! I’m rediscovering them and can’t wait for their new album, and for them to tour again!!! Great vocals, great tunes, and beautiful people. Please tour soon!!!!
