Morrissey cancels remainder of South American tour… and threatens retirement?

Morrissey

Morrissey’s on-again, off-again, partially on-again South American tour is now, once and for all, canceled, according to a morose note from the ex-Smiths singer in which he seems to be threatening retirement, writing, “Cancellations and illness have sucked the life out of all of us, and the only sensible solution seems to be the art of doing nothing.”

The announcement of the South American cancellation was posted early this morning to quasi-official fansite True To You — Moz’s preferred venue of communication — and finds the singer lamenting “the last of many final straws,” explaining that he’s been informed it’s too costly to “transport band and crew.”

It’s been a brutal year for Morrissey, with a string of health problems, tour reschedulings and repeated concert cancellations in North American. He now writes that “the future is suddenly absent” and that “the obvious conclusion stares back at me from the mirror.”

Morrissey’s message:

If I by chance your eye offend you

I am informed today that the projected tour of South America is snuffed out, thus euthanized – due, I’m reliably advised, to lack of funding. It’s quite easy to sell tickets, yet impossible to transport band and crew from F to G.

In a year when far too many disappointments have been buried this really is the last of many final straws, and I am not alone in feeling this. The future is suddenly absent, and my apologies are now so frequent as to be somewhat ridiculous, and it is I who apologize because no one else would bother. It is agonizing to be responsible for imparting such news – especially when it springs upon me unexpectedly and inexplicably. But the collapse of South America rings the curtain down with a colossal thud, and the major problems remain as insoluble now as they were in 2009. The obvious conclusion stares back at me from the mirror, and the wheels are finally off the covered wagon. Cancellations and illness have sucked the life out of all of us, and the only sensible solution seems to be the art of doing nothing.

As always I ask your pardon, and I offer pangs of overwhelming love and gratitude to the band and the crew, whose loyalty stretched above and beyond.

I shall see you in my dreams,

Morrissey

Morrissey returned to Los Angeles after falling ill with food poisoning on the eve of the South American trek. A Chilean concert promoter originally announced Morrissey had postponed the entire tour, but then, days later, informed fans that the ex-Smiths singer was planning to rescheduling his concerts in Chile for early August, although two shows in Peru wouldn’t be made up.

A week later, the Chilean dates make-up dates still had not been announced, but now are scuttled altogether, along with shows in Brazil and Argentina that hadn’t been canceled (see dates below).

Morrissey was to have resumed touring this month for the first time since his trouble-plagued North American trek in late 2012 and earlier this year that, after multiple postponements, finally was canceled altogether in mid-March. The singer’s publicists blamed the cancellations on “a series of medical mishaps over the past few months including a bleeding ulcer, Barrett’s esophagus and double pneumonia.”

  1. Sheesh, the guy’s as much a drama queen in life as in his lyrics.

  2. He has no respect for his fans at all- all he thinks about is his pocket.
    Good riddance.

  3. ViolentSteve

Except he’s always been this unreliable. In 1992, he cancelled twice before I actually got to see him.

  4. “I shall see you in my dreams” Nightmares, possibly!
    Sod off already Mozzy.

  5. “…the only sensible solution seems to be the art of doing nothing.”

Isn’t that precisely what Morrissey has been doing for the past 15 years?

  6. Maybe if only he’d eat meat he would have felt better.

Just announced: A new Morrissey single will be released in August. It’s called “The Future Is Suddenly Absent,” and the b-side will be
“The Obvious Conclusion Stares Back at Me from the Mirror.” Available at only the most maudlin of music shops.

  8. Maybe the solution is regroup and move forward! The writing is becoming more apparent that the time has come!!

  9. Perhaps we should just assume every show will be cancelled and you can just report when he actually plays.

  10. Cant say I blame him, if you dont have your health you dont have anything, and with him cancelling to be near his mom while sick showed to me he is human, so I hope he get well and healthy. Maybe do so soul searching and come up with some new stuff and just produce it himself and put it up on the net, no company to worry about.

The man has a heart. How good is it to knock him. What is
not understood leaves open wounds. The best of health to you
Morrissey, come back to Washington DC, we love you. Rest and
    recover.

  12. wow the comments on here are atrocious. get some class people. you act as if he chose to be ill, repeatedly, with horrible illnesses that left him bed-ridden for days and/or weeks on end. I suppose all of you think when you’re sick with serious illnesses the world will lift you up and idolize you, since you are so f*cking infatuated with yourselves. NONE of you deserve the man even on your best day apparently, so go cry upstairs you pathetic egotists.

    • Pass the tissues, we all have issues. If his health is so consistently bad, maybe he shouldn’t schedule shows and get fans’ hopes up.

      • yes, which is why he’s calling the whole thing off. he should at least get credit for “not giving up” and trying to honor the shows, but enough is enough.

    • LEAVE BRITNEY ALOOOONE!
Thanks for confirming the stereotype of the average Morrissey fan.

  13. Kinda sad but it is what is is. I think I’ll go and catch Johnny Marr at Hollywood Forever.

He needs to go out on a high note. Smiths reunion and then disappear for ever. I’m sure what will happen is a weekly reissue and repackaging of previous releases. Pretty lame really.

  14. I wish him well. Have seen him several times since 1989 and have never been disappointed. I really don’t think he intended for this to happen. Say what you will about his overall solo career, however, aside from Marr’s the first Electronic album and his stint in Modest Mouse, Moz is the only ex-Smith who has made great music over the years. Some bumps along the way, and he really botched the recent re-issue campaign, however, I have really enjoyed most of his albums.

  15. William nothing

    My worst fears in life:
    1)Morrissey dying
    2)Morrissey retiring
at least he changes his mind a lot…I will be in the front row when you do.
I love you forever and beyond !

  16. Derek Pants

Well, if he has Barrett’s Esophogus that can be quite
serious and potentially cnacerous. If this is true it is fairly
serious. That said, the Boy Who Cried Wolf does spring to mind. I
am notu sure what this, I apologize because noone else would bother
businees is about. It is Morrissey’s name in large capital letters
on stage, it is his brand, of course he should apologize. It is the
proper thing to do…and without being a martyr about it. Apolgize,
humbly, gracefully and leave it at that Moz. Can’t wait to see the
other half of the Smiths who seems to be riding a wave of good
    karma in LA in August.

  17. Sod Vicious

Funny that his fan-site is called “True to You.”

  18. Morrissey should play it like Bowie. Stay home, shut up, put music out…

  19. Scott Stalcup

As much as I got my arse kicked for liking The Smiths and Mozzer during my teenaged years, time to hang the “Closed. Back When I Get My Shit Together.” clock sign on the door, Steven Patrick.

Is it mental? Is it physical? Can he get over it, full stop? Go away and get it sorted before it makes the fans go away. Everybody has a breaking point, the question is who will get there first? Mozzer or his fans? Right now, it’s a dead heat.

  20. “Get off the stage” – Morrissey

  21. I honestly don’t understand all the animosity (antimozity…?) in these comments. Touring is a grueling, expensive excursion, and really a young man’s game; stress takes its toll, and these gents are all in their 50’s. January, a bleeding ulcer; March, pneumonia in both lungs; and now this. Who can blame him for calling quits (with a well-written, heartfelt apology, no less)?

As if you naysayers have never called in sick to work…

    • I think you are missing the point — he continues to schedule additional tour dates WHILE HE IS ALREADY ILL. He sells advanced tickets and then conveniently uses one of his various ailments to cancel.

And he does it over and over and over again. At this point he may have some psychological issues for vainly trying to stay in the public spotlight.

Like the above poster said, maybe Slicing Up Eyeballs should wait until he actually performs before reporting on his antics again, because it appears as though he has no intentions of actually touring again.

  22. SnagglePuss: “Exit, stage left”

  23. Charles Boyer

Sarcasm and sycophants, with nary a voice in between.

Bummer that some of Morrissey’s fans won’t be seeing him, bummer for Morrissey that he doesn’t feel well enough to continue.

That’s really all that needs to be said. He doesn’t need people apologizing for him, he did that on his own. His detractors don’t need to add more sarcasm and snark, we’ve had thirty years of it and there’s hardly an original quip left.

Hopefully, Morrissey’s health will return, and hopefully he’ll want to entertain again. If not, he had a remarkable career and was one of the voices that left its mark on his time.

  24. I call bullshit on his excuse blaming “travel expenses” on his inability to reschedule the South American shows. If he really wanted to play these shows, he would figure out a way to make it happen. (Maybe downgrade from the Ritz to the Best Western?)

  25. If A Flock of Seagulls can have their van stolen, Moz’s young pups in the band can tote the equipment too.

  26. His next move is screamingly obvious. He’s avoided it for years whilst his solo career was doing ok, but now he’s out of other realistic options and has no choice. Reform the fucking Smiths! I’m sure you’ve still got Johnny’s number somewhere…
