Kitchens of Distinction to release first album in 19 years this fall — hear first song sample

Kitchens of Distinction

Kitchens of Distinction will release its first new studio album in 19 years — the band ‘s fifth overall and first since 1994′s Cowboys and Aliens — on Sept. 30, and the group’s label this morning debuted the first taste of the new KOD music in the form of a 30-second snippet of an instrumental version of the album’s opening track.

The band revealed on Twitter last week that the album, the title of which has yet to be announed, will be released Sept. 30 by 3 Loop Music. Since then, frontman Patrick Fitzgerald — who, in recent years, has performed as Stephen Hero — has been posting samples of artwork that won’t be used (“I thought we’d start in a typically obtuse way, by showing you pictures that didn’t make it to the final artwork”).

And this morning, 3 Loop Music shared a 30-second video entitled “Oak Tree” to Facebook (see below), of which Fitzgerald noted, “The instrumental version of the opening track. Don’t let the gentle start fool you.”

Fitzgerald, Julian Swales and Dan Goodwin formed KOD in South London in 1985 and released their first single, “The Last Gasp Death Shuffle,” in 1987. Between 1989 and 1994, the trio released four studio albums before disbanding in 1996 following the release of final single “Feel My Genie.”

All three are back together on the new album, although Fitzgerald previously ruled out touring: “But NO live shows featuring all 3 of us. Do you hear? That’s a NO to those sitting in the back.”

The album will be released on CD, vinyl and in digital formats.

HELL YES ! I am the biggest KOD fan in California (unverified). Played them to death on my college radio gig….and IMHO “Strange Free World” is one the best albums ever.
To hear Julian Swales on the guitar again is extremely exciting. A remarkably intense band. Forget shoegaze, they developed a sound all their own.

  2. I’ll arm wrestle you for that title!

Any chance you were at the fabled Union Square lunchtime show in SF?

    Truly epic.
