Morrissey to release live cover of Lou Reed’s ‘Satellite of Love’ as digital, vinyl single

Morrissey and Lou Reed

Morrissey will celebrate the life and legacy of Lou Reed by releasing a new single featuring a live cover of the late rocker’s 1972 classic “Satellite of Love” recorded two years ago first as a digital download in early December and then on vinyl early next year, according to an announcement made via semi-official fansite True To You.

On Nov. 25, Parlophone Records will release the digital download of his cover of “Satellite of Love” recorded Nov. 25, 2011, at the Chelsea Ballroom at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas — exactly two years after its performance. Then, in January, a vinyl single on “a heavyweight 12-inch disc and a 7-inch picture disc, supported by additional live tracks” will follow.

In the wake of Reed’s death last month, Morrissey released a statement mourning the loss of the Velvet Underground leader, writing, “He had been there all of my life. He will always be pressed to my heart. Thank God for those, like Lou, who move within their own laws, otherwise imagine how dull the world would be.”

Below, watch an fan-filmed video of that performance, and check out Moz’s full statement.

UPDATE: Check out the single’s cover art below, too.

Parlophone Records will release Satellite of Love by Morrissey as a digital download on December 2nd. Recorded live at the Chelsea Ballroom at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas on 25 November 2011, the release will be further available in January as a heavyweight 12-inch disc and a 7-inch picture disc, supported by additional live tracks.

Satellite of Love is, of course, a song written by Lou Reed, who died on 27th October.

The release of Satellite of Love will coincide with the issue of Morrissey’s Autobiography in audiobook as read by acclaimed British actor David Morrissey.

  1. Lovely that Mozza can pocket a dash o’ cash for his mentor’s death! Classy!

  2. I didn’t know Moz knew the mannequin from Upstair’s at Eric’s!

  3. Does that mean he is signed to Parlophone for his next album as well?

    • I think it means Parlophone has no problem using an already recorded track from long ago, stick an even older picture of Morrissey on it and release it while surfing on the Reed hype. As to whether they are also willing to pay for Morrissey’s demands, studio time and extensive expenses to promote an album the singer may not be able to support with a tour due to whiplashes and diarrhea, that’s another question.

  4. ~do i own Lou Reed cd’s in my collection? – yes.
~do i mourn his passing? – no… (i’m a nurse who sees dying patients regularly. i’ll leave the mourning up to his loved ones.)
~musically, as an audiophile and avid collector, do i believe his work is overrated? – yes.
~will i expect aural nausea and vomiting if i hear another cover of “satellite of love?” – YES! PLEASE STOP THE MADNESS!

  5. Sounds great to me and Morrissey seems very emotional during the performance.
