Pixies introduce A Perfect Circle’s Paz Lenchantin as band’s new touring bassist

Paz Lenchantin

Without formally acknowledging the departure of Kim Shattuck following the band’s fall European tour, the Pixies this morning announced her replacement for shows in North America, Europe and South America next year: bassist Paz Lenchantin, who played in A Perfect Circle and Billy Corgan’s brief post-Smashing Pumpkins outfit Zwan.

In an email sent to fans early this morning, drummer David Lovering said of his new bassist:  “We are really looking forward to playing with her on these dates. Working with different bass players is very new for the band, but we’re having a great time doing it.”

Lenchantin played in the original incarnation of Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan’s A Perfect Circle, performing on the albums Mer de Noms and Thirteenth. She left to join Corgan in Zwan, which released just one album, but later returned to APC for their eMOTIVe record.

No mention was made of Shattuck, of The Muffs, who revealed on Twitter and Facebook late last month that she was “super disappointed to learn that my time with the Pixies ended today.”

Shattuck was introduced as the Pixies’ touring bassist on July 1, just weeks after the group revealed Deal had quit. She made her public debut with the band Sept. 6 at a surprise warm-up gig in Los Angeles, and played a handful of U.S. dates with the Pixies before the band headed overseas for a European tour.

Currently, the band has a North American tour set to open Jan. 15 in Toronto, and has been confirming festival appearances in South America and Europe for late spring and summer (see full dates below).

The band today also debuted the music video for the fourth and final track from its recently released EP-1, an animated clip that was written, directed and animated by Liviu Boar of the Romania-based ReeAnimation. You can see that below, too.

  1. Grats Pez, you made Pixies Female Bassist of the Month.

  2. Scott Stalcup

Place your bets, ladies and gentlemen. How long before Chuck kicks her to the kerb as well? Rob set the opener at one month, who wants to raise him two?

  3. Well, given that the tour is two months, I’ll take that bet!

  4. Scott Stalcup

We have two months! Do I hear three?

  5. OK, seriously – what is the deal with them having only female replacements? I play, so it’s no knock on females. Just wondering why they are only after a female.

    • Frank said something about a balance of the sexes within the Pixies. I’m surprised people still give a shit.

    • I would say backing vocals have a lot to do with it, along with the band’s established image.

I’m disappointed Kim2 didn’t stick, as I thought she was excellent in the role and a rather charming presence. But I guess they know what they’re doing, and I’m willing to give this new gal a chance.

I should add that I’ve grown to like the new EP as much as anything they’ve ever done — blasphemy, I know, but it really has re-ignited my interest in the band. (Which makes this one more opportunity to say that the reviewer at Pitchfork is a total wanker. Yes, you.)

  6. Jeff Sturges

If the Pixies want to retain their indie cred then Kira
Roessler will be their NEXT bass player.

  7. David Lovering: “We are really looking forward to playing with her on these dates. Working with different bass players is very new for the band, but we’re having a great time doing it.” So, she’ll be playing on “these dates”. Perhaps no more than that. And the band is “having a great time” working with different bassists. I doubt said bassists will he having as much of a great time when they keep parting company with the other members…

    • Good point, Toby… also sounds like David’s pulling out a magic trick of a blanket statement regarding their current situation.
I agree with lotus that Kim S. was a good fit for the band… but I also agreed with Pitchfork for the first time ever… the new Pixies EP is shite, mate. Glad you got something out if it.

Frank is still pissed at Kim D. for pulling the rug from under him and the guys. Black’s too proud and egotistical to admit and clearly define how and why Kim D. was such an important part of the band. Kim D. has no interest even if Frank came with his tail between his legs.

For the record, Paz Lenchantin is an excellent musician and possibly the best one in the Pixies, which actually may be good for the band and force the boys to take it a step up (or finally pack it in for good!).

      • Oh please–stop the whinging, Lenchantin isn’t a girl–she’s an adult, and a professional musician. She knows the score (bad pun). Kim D left on her own–she wasn’t fired. According to the guys–she gave no reason–just left. And, how do you know Kim S was a good fit?

        • ander, did you not read my post?
I’m well aware that Lenchantin is an adult, professional musician – male or female.
In fact, I went so far as to say she is probably the most musically talented of all your current Pixies.
And yes, no doubt working with Corgan in ill-fated Zwan, she knows “the score”.

I think it’s common knowledge and at this point, an established fact that Kim D. left the Piss on her own terms. In fact, I think I believe that a point in my previous post.

I’m not a member of the band so I don’t know if Kim S. was in fact a good fit for the band but I can say that Frank’s in “limbo” ;)

  8. Is no one going to comment on the video? I think it’s quite well done, whether or not you care for the song.

    • As a fan of animation I do dig the video. It isn’t the kind of video I’d expect from the band, which I think is what they want (to free themselves from expectations based on their past). As long as Frank doesn’t swing from a wrecking ball naked it’s all good to me.

      • Bwahaha! Very good!

Every video from this EP (plus “Bagboy”) had a very different feel, and so I’m guessing a different director. I thought the efforts for “What Goes Boom,” “Indie Cindy” and now “Another Toe” were all well done and interesting, recalling a day when videos were still a prominent way to advertise a record.

  9. Hooray for half-informed internet comments-section comments. Paz is an incredible bassist. I was lucky enough to see her in the Entrance Band, as they opened for Mazzy Star. She laid down grooves so fluid and sweet, they’d make you slap your momma.
