Stream: David J premieres ‘You Suit a Rainy Day’ — first single off ‘An Eclipse of Ships’

David J 'An Eclipse of Ships'

David J, the former bassist of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets, this week released the first single off his upcoming Kickstarter-funded solo album, a gentle, acoustic number called “You Suit a Rainy Day” that precedes next month’s arrival of An Eclipse of Ships, an album he’s described as “a journal of the heart and a paean to Woman as muse.”

Below, you can stream the song via video clip, or buy the track for $1 over at Bandcamp.

The new album will be David J’s ninth solo effort, following up 2011′s Not Long For this World. His solo debut, Etiquette of Violence, was just reissued in an expanded 2CD set. He also released a re-recorded version of Bauhaus’ “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” this past Halloween.

More recently, he joined the band Stellarum, which has released a cover of Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” and is working on a full album of original material that’s expected out later this year.

  1. Sounds like he’s been listening to Lloyd Cole, a whole lot of Lloyd Cole

    • Maybe the other way round–this is classic David J–whimsical, hermetic, eccentric. Though Lloyd is no doubt, a better golfer.

  2. Stars in step

Would like to support him but this is not my flavor.

  3. Hmm, you can hear it in there somewhere. A decent producer could drag it out of him. But he’s just phoning it in here. The singer/songwriter trope ain’t doing it for him.

    • He’s not phoning it in, Tony–but you’re right, yes–he could use a good producer & a decent band. Thus the Kickstarter. Back in the day, when he made a series of spectral solos–he had the Bauhaus thing to ride. But, as I said–I like it–who knows, singles lie.

  4. Suddenly I’m thinking how very interesting David J hooking up with Graham Coxon could be.

  5. It has smart lyrics, grim references to decay imagery…and it’s dull (Sorry!). That’s David J–one of the brainest songwriters out there, but it’s just not exciting stuff.
