Daniel Ash turns to fans to help fund, select songs for new ‘Stripped’ album

Daniel Ash Pledge Music

Daniel Ash of Bauhaus, Love and Rockets and Tones on Tail is turning to his fans to fund his new album Stripped and help select the songs from “the many albums I have been a part of,” a selection of tracks that Ash will then re-record in stripped-down arrangements.

Ash this week launched a two-month crowdfunding effort through Pledge Music that allows fans to pre-order the album in a variety of different formats with, depending on the level of payment, a number of different incentives, from vinyl records, old Love and Rockets stickers from 1987 and original Bubblemen artwork to — for $45,000 — Ash’s 1992 Heritage Softail HD, a motorcycle nicknamed “The Christmas Tree.”

Once fans contribute, they’ll be allowed to vote on songs for possible inclusion on the Stripped record, which is expected out by September. It’s not yet known what songs are available for voting.

See Ash’s full message to fans below:

Hello and Welcome!

Since you guys have shown me endless support throughout my career, I wanted to give you all the chance to be a part of my next album. I want to put together an album of stripped-down versions of my favorite songs, but then I got to thinking…. It should be YOUR favorite songs!

I want YOU guys to vote on your favorite songs from the many albums I have been a part of. Then I’ll strip those songs down and record all new versions of them.

Once you pledge your favorite package below, you gain access to a hidden section of the site that will allow you to vote for which songs I put on the “Stripped” album. You’ll also receive a digital download of the album as soon as it’s ready and before anyone else hears it! You’ll also have the chance to get involved in some very exclusive merchandise and interactive experiences that I’ve never made available or done before.

This is completely new territory for me so I’m very happy you’ll be right alongside me as we make this album together.

Daniel

  1. Is it some sort of promotional tool? Like getting publicity through funding? Strange for me!
Well, I am sure he will get enough funds. There are people who love him :)

  2. I believe David J financed his most recent album via crowd-sourcing as well.

I’ll contribute to this, I’ve enjoyed most of his solo material. I saw him live during the Foolish thing desire tour. I hope a new tour will follow.

Why doesn’t he sell that Triumph he’s trying to look cool with and fund his own lousy album of retread tunes?

    • He’s keeping the Triumph Thruxton, and dumping a nasty Harley instead for $15k. He’s selling drawings and such for $50 a pop which isn’t bad. It’s sort of depressing to see though. I guess we’ll see how depressing it is when we’re a few days away from his goal date!

  5. What a TERRIBLE photo!! He looks a right berk.

  6. I have never liked David J or Daniel’s solo work much over the years, which is odd because as the chief songwriters for L n’ R they are flawless in my mind. Shame they couldn’t keep it together longer.

  7. This is a waste of time. Who cares about re-recorded versions? My advice to Daniel;

    1. Reform Love & Rockets and tour to make money
    2. Reform Bauhaus and tour to make money

The masses of fans don’t care about anything else at this point. Especially not stripped down re-recorded versions of those songs.

  8. Love and Rockets should reunite. The Bauhaus ship has sailed, and Peter Murphy said it himself whilst on his Mr. Moonlight tour last year – he was left to hold the flag (and he does an exquisite job doing so). I would see Love and Rockets in a heartbeat if they reunite. Put the band back together, do a tour and a re-release of Love and Rockets masterpieces, take the money from that and create your solo work.

  9. Really, he needs to get Tones on Tail back together. By far the best of his post Bauhaus efforts IMO.

    Better idea:
One big mutha of a tour where Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, and Tones on Tail’s line-ups all play, with solo sets by David, Daniel, and Peter. Record all the shows through Instant Live or some other company and they need never work again. Shame Mick Karn died or one could’ve got Dali’s Car in there as well. Maybe they could bring The Jazz Butcher out of mothballs as well?

This is going to be fab!

  12. I love Daniel Ash and a lot of his solo stuff. I am glad to see that he is being active and taking a new approach. Of all the statements here I love the idea of a lineup/mashup, of all the previous Ash related bands. I caught one post-2000 Bauhaus tour, however, for an album called Going Away White. A savvy friend with me tracked down Daniel at a bar where we and many other fans were hanging out and there was some serious tension in the air and drama going on. I don’t believe that final Bauhaus album was ever seriously supported because there is some very bad blood between Daniel and Peter Murphy, sadly. So the mash up is probably not going to happen though I would love to see it. A monster mash if you will.
