Stream/Download: Auto Reverse Mixtape (September 2014) — A Tribute to John Peel

Auto Reverse Sept 2014

Well, that last mea culpa, back in May, deserves a mea cupla all of its own. But here we are, four months later. And we’ve finally coughed up a new entry in our Auto Reverse mixtape series. But it’s a good one: A tribute to the late, great BBC DJ and tastemaker John Peel.

In honor of what would have been Peel’s 75th birthday this past weekend, we’ve compiled two 45-minute sides featuring (mostly) recordings made for Peel’s BBC program that you can stream via Mixcloud, or download, at least for a limited time, courtesy of the link included below.

The only exception are the first two tracks of Side A, for which we’ve subbed in the actual recording, from Sept. 25, 1978, of Peel famously playing The Undertones’ “Teenage Kicks” — his all-time favorite song — twice in a row. (The band would record eight sessions for Peel, but never play that song.)

Included on the tape are some of our favorite Peel Sessions recordings from the likes of The Smiths, Pixies, The House of Love, Joy Division, Billy Bragg, The Human League, Joe Jackson, Galaxie 500, Wire, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Only Ones, The Jesus and Mary Chain and more.

Check it about below — and enjoy.

How can this be a tribute to Peelie? All the tracks are playing at the correct speed.

Wait, how can there be no Wedding Present on here if it’s Peel favorites?
