The Cure to perform ‘small clutch of happy hits’ at pair of London benefit shows this week

The Cure circa 2013

The Cure will warm up for its three-night stand at London’s Hammersmith Eventim Apollo next week with a pair of special guest appearances on Thursday and Friday at the Brian and Robin’s Christmas Compendium of Reason benefit concert at the same venue, performing “a small clutch of ‘happy hits'” both nights.

What exactly is a small clutch? The band, on its website, explains: “We think around 3 or so… never quite sure until we count though… and in the act of counting…”

The concerts are described as “two great nights of science, music, comedy and wonder, including charm quarks, strange quarks and confusion” benefiting Medecins Sans Frontieres and The Sophie Lancaster Foundation. As of Tuesday, tickets remain available for both nights.

Then, on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights, Robert Smith and Co. will perform what are being billed as two-and-a-half-hour shows that will find the band “playing songs drawn from their entire 37-year-old catalogue, including deep cuts, pop songs, fan favourites and surprises galore.”

And, as they did at the same venue 30 years ago, long-running post-punk act and Cure associates And Also the Trees will open the Dec. 21, 22 and 23 shows.

Those concerts, however, are sold out.

  1. I always take a smoke or beer break when they start playing the silly songs. I’ll stay for JLH, but Friday I’m in Love and I’m out.

  2. Mint car would be nice. The Exploding Boy would also be appreciated.
