The The today released a music video for the band’s comeback single “We Can’t Stop What’s Coming,” an emotional clip that, like the song, pays tribute to bandleader Matt Johnson’s late brother Andrew Johnson, aka Andy Dog, who designed much of The The’s artwork.
The video, taken from the upcoming documentary about The The called “The Inertia Variations,” mixes filmed scenes, an in-studio performance of the song, vintage The The clips and old home-movie footage of Matt Johnson and his brother, who died in January 2016.
The new single — The The’s first since the download-only “Mrs. Mac” in 2007 — finds Johnson backed by several former bandmates, including Zeke Manyika on percussion and James Eller on bass — plus Smiths guitar legend Johnny Marr, who played on Mind Bomb and Dusk.
It was released on 7-inch for Record Store Day in the U.K., and when Johnson tried to sell extra copies online, his site was overwhelmed by fans. After that, he promised to release the single digitally and on CD. It’s not clear what those plans will entail, but the song is available now via Amazon in the U.K.

Great song and video. I wish that the 7″ records would be re-pressed or that I could find one for a reasonable price.
